Thanks all so much. Here's some more detail for those interested, and current status.
As most of you know dad had a heart attack last Memorial day weekend. He had 99% or more blockage in arteries/ventricles on both sides of the heart. They were able to stent most of them, but several veins off an artery on the left side could not be stented. The recommendation then was that dad would recover for a month or two, then have triple bypass surgery. However, my dad's father died in bypass surgery so he's scared shitless to go under the knife and has put it off, and planned to put it off indefinitely. Lately he's been having trouble breathing, and the cause of this appears to be heart problems again, and in particular the doctor mentioned a weakening of the mitral valve, which is allowing reversed blood flow, which in turn has caused a fluid build up in his lungs and legs (hence his breathing problems).
So we were given the impression last night that his cardiologist would be arriving around 8am and there would be a cardio-catheterization done this morning, but when we arrived at the hospital at 7:45 I spotted his cardiologist leaving. He briefly explained some of the above and that because of the fluid in his lungs he can't go on the table for any kind of procedure because he'd need a crash team if he was laid flat for more than about 20 minutes, and they need him flat for an hour. So they are treating him to stabilize his condition and drain his fluids until Tuesday, and we'll go from there. I'm not at all sure I have the details right as my information seems to change every couple of hours and I haven't had a chance to really grill the doctor for details, but that's what I have so far.
