Dear activists,

We have just this moment launched an urgent campaign to help get the Gaza blockade lifted. You are vital in the success of the campaign. I ask that you read the below, take action and then spend some time spreading the word amongst your own networks- it is you and your friends and contacts that can really build momentum.

With the eyes of the world focused on the situation in Gaza, the government has its first opportunity to show its mettle on the international stage. The words are there:

"There can be no better response from the international community to this tragedy than to achieve urgently a durable resolution to the Gaza crisis" William Hague, June 1 2010

“The blockade is neither justified nor sustainable . . .it has created a humanitarian catastrophe. This incident has shown that we need to move towards removing the blockade” Nick Clegg, June 2 2010

The UK can call for an emergency international conference to lift the blockade of Gaza, allowing the free movement of people, humanitarian aid and commercial goods.

Email the government
To show your support for bold government action. Feel free to edit the text.

Text LIFT to 70066
To show your support for bold government action. This is a brilliant 2 second action as you will then get a reply which you can text around all of your contacts- hopefully creating a bit of a chain awareness plan.

Send a sticking plaster to your MP
To symbolize the need to lift restrictions on essential humanitarian aid and goods – with a letter asking them to contact the Foreign Secretary calling for an emergency international conference.

Any and all of the above with your friends, colleagues and family. How about using this checklist to make sure you get in touch through all the channels available to you?

1.        Do the actions yourself.
2.        Update your Twitter and Facebook profile with the action.
3.        Email your friends and family the action and this checklist.
4.        Email the people in your neighbourhood who you reckon are movers and shakers with the action.
5.        Twitter the action, with different wording, 4 times a day especially at 4:01 (most read apparently!!)
6.        Keep your eyes peeled on our website for more ideas and activities that will help us together make a huge noise.

Did you know?

  • Four out of five men, women and children in Gaza rely on humanitarian aid
  • The aid allowed into Gaza is only a fraction of what is needed
The 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip have been living under Israeli blockade for three years and are in dire need of sufficient supplies.  The international community should work effectively together to lift the blockade of the occupied territory which would allow for the emergence of a structural, long-term solution to the humanitarian and development needs of the Gazan people. The blockade of Gaza has widely been condemned as collective punishment, which is illegal under international law.

We will be developing a briefing pack and lots more content and ideas to help you and your groups make a real difference.

Thanks for all you are doing, if I can help with anything please give me a bell.

Lucy

Hi Lucy

I was great to see you yesterday ,I just thought that I would remind you to put the post up as the event is on Sunday. See you then? And is there any chance of getting a camera from the office that we could borrow on the day?

Take care

HI all

Thanks Adizah for the reminder here is the post http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/pressoffice/?p=13103  (sorry for the pic Tess- you look fab though!)

Please note- emailing eastlondonca...@googlegroups.com doesn;t actually get through- it just bounces back. Do make sure you change all of your comms to an email address that does work- maybe set up a new google email address to match it that you can all check or something?

Lucy

Also, who is able to get to Tina We Salute at 4pm to help set up?
Adizah I know you are making a massive effort to come back for it from
Norwich so just get there when you can and Alex is unable to make it
due to work. I can bring my camera as Mary Pole the media intern asked
for some pics of the event as well. Lucy also printed some sign up
sheets for us and gave me t-shirts, leaflets, flags, badges, action
cards etc - thanks so much!

See you all on Sunday - enjoy the weather!
