Lan had been at Eastern for many months now. But he had spent much of that time isolated from the other Candidates. He probably looked a bit stuffy to them, really, always quiet, always studying, always trying to prove himself to the leaders and teachers. He certainly did not really have any friends. It was hard to do so when every potential friend was also a potential tormentor. But... in all his months there, Lan had yet to see anyone quite like his uncle. Of course, his uncle knew how to behave when others could see him... It was putting yourself in a position to be alone with someone else that was dangerous.

But of all the other Candidates who still had no cotmate, Ozmyr struck Lan as the most friendly. And if this was a bad idea, he could always move back to his old cot. So, for today, he had received permission to move in with Ozmyr. Assuming he was amenable, of course.

Lan knocked on the door frame of his cot and waited nervously.

He had been studying this lesson for the longest time and was getting kind of tired. Ozmyr usually did pretty well in his studies but today he was just kind of restless and having trouble focusing his mind. When the knock came at the door it was quite honestly a welcome relief.

"Hello Lan," he said with a smile after he had opened the door. He had seen the other fellow around during their classes together but didn't really know him all that well. Whatever he had in mind though had to be better than fussing over his lessons anymore. "Come on in. Whats on your mind? I hope it's not lessons because I've had about all I can handle of that today."

Lan stopped himself from shrinking back from Ozmyr's invitation. He had such an honest, genuine smile! It made Lan feel guilty that his first reaction was always to want to flinch, even if he felt he was likely justified in that instinct. A'rail could smile like that if he wanted to, too. Though Ozmyr did not seem to have the same sharpness in his eyes that betrayed A'rail's smile for those who knew what to look for.

So, Lan smiled back. It looked like an almost relieved smile, really, but in the end, Lan's smiles looked that way half the time anyway.

"It's not lessons... Listen, I don't mean to intrude, but... seeing as how we're both holdbred originally, and how, you know, we both don't have cotmates just now..." He blushed, feeling overly forward. "What I mean to say is, I... I mean, I'm not asking you to move or anything; I'd move my things, and... er... I mean, only if you don't mind." Guh! Why did he feel so flustered?

Ozmyr was puzzled, trying to understand why the other boy seemed so flustered. Finally it began to dawn on him. Lan wanted to be room mates.

"Oh, so you want to bunk over here then? Why didn't you say so?"

He smiled and gestured towards all the open space in the room.

"That would be fine I guess. There is plenty of room and it does get too quiet sometimes with just me in here."

Truth be told it als got a bit lonely as well. Ozmyr had always been an independent young man but it didn't seem right when he didn't have a big old family around him. Maybe Lan's suggestion had more merit than he had first suspected.

"I hope you can stand snoring though. My brothers always said it was pretty bad...but how would I know? I'm always asleep at the time."

"I can sleep through anything," Lan assured Ozmyr, looking visibly relieved when he agreed to the new bunking arrangement. He wondered if the snoring were the reason no one had bunked with him yet; he was... super nice and just an all around good guy. At least, he seemed that way. There was only one way to find out, really.., He smiled. He really wanted this to work. He really did. "Should I, uh... go get my stuff?" he asked. "Or I guess we should let the Candidatemaster know first?"

"I don't think they will mind," he said thoughtfully. "But perhaps we should go let them know. You suppose he is still in the office?"

There was always someone available, even after hours so to speak. Still, they could probably wait till the morning and do it properly.

"How about this? We just go get your stuff and let them know in the morning. Then if they have any objection we could move it all back. It's not like it's very far."

That made good sense, at least as far as Ozmyr could tell. Honestly he had enjoyed the first few months of quiet a private room had given him after being around a large family. It got old kind of fast though and he thought it might be better to have a room mate to hang out with. When he needed a few moments of quiet time there was a whole big Weyr out there to find some privacy in.

Lan looked a bit worried at first, furrowing his brow, at the thought of hoping that the appropriate bookkeeping staff were still on hand. There was probably always someone there, but maybe not the Candidatemaster himself, and maybe this needed his ultimate approval? He had never transferred rooms before, other than when he had moved to Southern and then to Eastern, and both times he had needed the Candidatemaster's approval. But... those were big transfers. Maybe this would be different.

But then Ozmyr had a better idea that relieved Lan's worry. He smiled, perking up a bit. It was very hard not to get excited about this. This could really work, he felt. He could really start making a friend he could trust. He just seemed so... genuine. "That sounds like a good idea. You... don't mind helping?" He had said, 'we,' after all.
