Though the summer heat hung heavy on the air, there was at least one stall that had brought along its own additional warmth. A small firepit had been dug, and currently was being put to use warming several large pots of flit eggs positioned around the glowing embers. The eggs were grouped according to size, and ran the gamut of the usual prices, from 2 marks for an egg likely to hatch a green, to 5 marks for an egg suspected to hold a bronze inside. Jastin was going around and carefully checking the heat of the sands in each box, every now and again lifting his shrewd gaze to make sure that his two apprentices were unpacking his other supplies in an orderly fashion. Each of the teenagers sported a simple set of shoulderknots strung with a lavender cord, just like their master - Jastin was officially a dragonhealer, but he had specifically studied the ailments of flits and whers and was thus able to effectively make his home outside of the Weyr as he practiced his specialty, beholden to the support of no one location in particular. Flit breeding made him a tidy sum of marks, and so his apprentices were always fed and his own gold flit always pampered – and he had the pride of knowing that no one would ever buy a dud egg from *his* stall. At least no one would ever buy a dud egg from *his* stall. On his shoulder, the miniature queen Rija cheeped in offense at the very thought. After all, one of the clutches currently for sale was her own - *she* would never lay a dud! Jastin grinned and lifted one hand to deliver a mollifying stroke up her slender golden throat, feeling the familiar thrum against the back of his fingers. “Perish the thought, sweetheart,” he murmured softly to her, his gaze flicking suddenly away as it was caught by the sweeping descent of the first draconic arrival to the Gather. The sun was rising and the crowds would begin soon… Jastin glanced back to the large stone egg pots ringing the firepit, and a surprisingly sentimental smile lingered on his face as he thought of the single egg pot that his tiny queen had *insisted* upon hiding within the structure of the firepit itself. Someone was about to have a much better Gather day than they expected… It was lucky that Rija had never picked poorly, he supposed, but everyone she’d selected in the past had been someone he’d been glad to delight with the surprise, and he was looking forward to having that opportunity again. Another dragon bugle struck the air, and the Dragonhealer’s smile broadened back to his usual grin, his gaze returning front. “Ready for the customers, Rija?”

~Always!~

A long counter in front of the firepit held various flit-oriented supplies that the stall also sold - individual egg pots and oil were the most obvious essentials, but there were also a few slings to hold newborns, as well as a few flit-sized hammocks and pillows. Two large signs leaned up against either side of the counter, their lettering large but neatly-printed. They were identical in their wording, each leaning at a diagonal so that someone approaching from the front or from either side could read them easily:

The Hatchery: Jastin's Flit Eggs

Bronze Eggs - 5 marks
Brown Eggs - 4 marks
Blue Eggs - 3 marks
Green Eggs - 2 marks

Satisfaction guaranteed!

OOC: When a character requests ICly to see a certain group of eggs (bronze, brown, blue, or green), I'll show you the picture of the eggs available, and you pick which egg your charrie wants. If you'd like to have your character purchase an egg which hatches another color, which does occasionally happen sometimes since the pricing is essentially based on just a good guess, please email me directly. We'll only be allowing a maximum of two of those situations this Gather, and the flits involved can only hatch one color 'level' DOWN from what was purchased. So a brown egg could hatch a blue, but not a bronze or a green, and a blue egg could hatch a green.

Furthermore, if you'd like to have your flit written up for you and the sheet emailed to you as a surprise, please email Killingly directly. ^_^

OOC: Claiming my bronze from last March madness, if it's okay.  If not, I'm happy to spend this one on it.  M'kan needs a bit of cheering up.

M'kan was so ready for this!  Clutching five marks in his hand, he walked straight over to the fire lizard seller, not pausing to look at the other stuff on sale.  He was going to do it.  He was going to get a flit.  A real one this time.  And it was going to be the best flit ever!  He was going to train it and name it and cuddle it and love it forever and ever and ever.

((Until it dies you mean,)) Attith snorted, ((I don't believe the typical fire lizard lifespan is likely to surpass yours, if the trend of smaller animals having shorter livelihoods holds.  Although if you persist in ignoring the fine points of drills...))

[[It's going to be awesome.  You'll love having a fire lizard around, I promise!]]

And M'kan had saved up all the marks himself!  Kind of...okay maybe he'd cheated just a little bit, but...his mom had offered!  Offered enough for him to get his own little bronze fire lizard.

"One bronze fire lizard egg, please," M'kan asked confidently, pushing his marks defiantly across the table, "The best one you've got."

Anomi hesitated in front of the fire lizard egg stall, staring wistfully while at the same time trying to *not* stare because staring was rude.

Two marks for a green egg... a waste, her father would scoff and say. Fire lizards were useful creatures, to be sure, but a girl of her standing had no need of one, so it would only be a frivolous pet. Back home in frosty High Reaches, where only the highest born and the richest could afford the creatures, Anomi having one would look arrogant, distasteful, as if she were putting on airs far above herself. Besides, having to care for and raise a pet would give her less time to attend to her other duties. Two marks was far too much for a humble, unwed girl to be spending on fancies, and such troublesome ones at that.

Oh, but how she *wanted* one.

Torn, Anomi bit her lower lip, struggling with herself. She could afford the two marks, barely. That was all the spending money she'd allowed herself for the Gather. She could... and she *really* wanted to, but...

T'val had come to the Gather for fun and some sight seeing and perhaps to see Anomi again. He'd liked her enough to want to further the acquaintance at their first meeting. Whether anything would come of it other than friendship he didn't particularly care. He was much too young to be getting married so soon, and as a dragonrider, he wouldn't really be getting married. Unless whoever he fell in love with happened to be Holdborn and wanted such a ceremony. He wouldn't protest, in that situation, feeling that a true wedding was romantic, even if many a weyrmated pair found more happiness than some wedded ones he'd come across.

He walked along the lanes, his hands in his pockets, enjoying the morning and the general buzz of Gather preparations. The young man stopped near the Firelizard Egg stall, looking at the wares and set up. He turned to see who else might be near, wondering if Anomi would even show when there she was! Tori smiled and walked closer to her, noticing her wistful, desirous stare towards the eggs. "Hello, Anomi! How are you?" He debated with himself if he should offer to buy her an egg, wondering if she didn't have enough marks, and that was why she was so wistful.

He checked the prices. With his savings from when he first became an apprentice through now, minus the few things he'd bought during his time away from the Weyr, he had more than enough to consider a gift of an egg none to pricey at all. A green egg for Anomi, he thought, remembering how much she'd liked Last. Two marks would be a small price from his twenty-five marks. "Would you like an egg? I'd enjoy buying you a green as a gift. A sort of welcome to Eastern kind of gift." T'val really, really hoped she wouldn't think he was being too forward. He didn't want to scare such a nice girl as her away from dragonriders.

Anomi jolted guiltily at the sudden greeting, then turned to give T'val a shy, slightly sheepish smile. "Oh, um, h-hi, T'val. I'm... I'm well, thank you. And yourself?"

Anomi's eyes went wide, and she stared at him for a second. Eh? What? Had... had he just offered to...

"Oh, no, I couldn't," she squeaked automatically. "That's... that's too much, you shouldn't spend your marks on me. Um, thank you very much for the offer," Anomi added, hoping her refusal wouldn't be seen as rude. She was too stunned by the generous offer to think of whether or not it had any implications. Her eyes drifted wistfully over to the fire lizard stall again. "I... I can't really justify getting one anyway," she mumbled, staring at her feet.

That's right. She couldn't justify it, she just couldn't. When had she become the type of person who pined for things they couldn't have? How embarrassing.

T'val smiled back at her. "I'm well. And it's not too much, really. It's not like I need them when a Gather's not going on, plus I've got plenty saved up. Please?" He hoped he didn't sound too much like he was begging with the 'please' but he really wanted to see her smile. He'd picked up a few things after listening around to the other Weyrlings about how her brother was a greenrider and even if he hadn't been entirely raised in the same rigid mentality of the North, he was a Holder. He knew what that Impression could mean and how it would shame someone, especially someone hoping for higher grandeur than they had. Not that he knew that about her family, but either way, a green-Impressed son would be a bad thing to any Holder from the North, he was sure. Anomi deserved a smile.

"Think of it as a little bit of wishful thinking. You with a green firelizard and hopefully you with a dragon, right?"

Persepha wandered closer to the Stall, her eyes so round it was as if they would pop right out of her skull. She had chosen a simple, lilac gather dress, with pockets she had sewn herself. Her belt sat snugly around her waist. She had just enough marks to make a solid bid, so she wound her way up slowly and calmly waited her turn.

"I would also like an egg likely to be a bronze." Persepha said, more than a little shy. Her stomach fluttered and for one panicky moment, she thought she would vomit. She took a deep breath and counting out her marks, presented them demurely. Inside, her heart was beating a a mile a minute. Awntreth, who was sunning with a few other dragons, turned her mind toward her rider.

{{Calm yourself. You have enough to buy the egg. You've been sewing and selling so much. You are sure to get what you want.}} Awntreth said. Then, dreamily, the dragon repeated herself.

{{Yes....you are sure to get what you want. It's fate.}}

<<"Think of it as a little bit of wishful thinking. You with a green firelizard and hopefully you with a dragon, right?">>

Anomi's face was bright red, flustered uncertainty and confusion gradually transitioning to flustered gratitude and happiness, the latter actually giving way to a deeper flush than the former. She'd only spoken to T'val once, and yet he seemed to really want to do something so kind and generous for her. It was almost overwhelming, the stunned delight that she'd found such a wonderful friend, and in a male dragonrider on the Southern Continent, at that.

Her lingering anxieties about what her family would think faded. That's right, she *did* want to Impress a dragon, she *did,* and she *would,* so... so she wouldn't be going back ho- back to High Reaches with the fire lizard anyway. And... it would be a convenient way to communicate with her family, and... and maybe if Father was mad at her about Impressing a green fire lizard, he'd be *less* mad at K'lor for Impressing a green dragon.

And even if none of that reasoning held much water with Father or Mikloran, it would be rude to refuse T'val's generosity when he was being so kind, and... and she *wanted* one, so... so wasn't it okay for her to have one?

Fighting back the urge to let her eyes tear up, she finally dipped her head in a tiny nod. "Thank you, T'val" she whispered. She was still staring at her feet, so she lifted stubborn eyes to meet his. "But, um... I-I'll pay for half of it!"

T'val didn't know even more than the tip of the iceberg as far as Anomi's story went, but her happiness at actually accepting his offer was worth any possible repercussions. He didn't have many friends at the Weyr that he could give gifts to or felt comfortable even thinking of doing something like this for. And if Anomi stuck around, he could count her as a friend. He hoped.

"You're very welcome," he replied as she finally looked him in the eye after her episode of blushing. He chose not to comment on it. "Oh!" He hadn't thought she'd suggest that. It was only two marks after all, well within his budget. "Uhm, I'm sure I can pay for the full amount, I've got enough marks for this Gather for that. And like I said, it's a gift. Right?" Tori hoped his reasoning made sense but if she insisted he wasn't sure that it wouldn't be rude to not allow her to pay for half of it.

Anomi smiled at him. "Thank you so much, but, um, I'd feel better about accepting such a wonderful gift if I could at least split the cost with you. Please?" T'val really was so sweet. Maybe it was a little rude of her to press the issue so much when he was already being so kind, but she just couldn't bring herself to accept such generosity without doing at least a *little* to alleviate the guilt of accepting it when she knew it might get her in trouble with her father and Mikloran.

T'val worried he might be flushing just the slightest bit but he kept his composure and cleared his throat. "Sure, I mean, if you really want to, yes, we can split the cost." He stepped closer and more towards the center of the booth's front, looking towards Anomi for her to follow him a little closer to purchase her egg. "Excuse me, sir. We would like to purchase a green egg, if we may." He hoped it was alright with Anomi that he spoke; she didn't seem like the type of person to easily address a person of authority like the dragonhealer before them.
