Yaeghar gave the kitchen a long look, then threw a grin at the other boy who'd been assigned to the chore with him.

"Not so bad looking," he began, testing the bristles of a long-handled scrubbing brush against his palm. He'd gotten plenty familiar with the galley on his ship during his stint as the cabin boy. Sure, this kitchen was a sight bigger, but a kitchen was a kitchen. The work would be the same.

"I'm Yeaghar, just got in yesterday. You been here long?"

Lan did his best not to eye the new one sideways. Yeaghar. He filed the name away; it was good to know people's names. Instead, he gave the new boy a very convincing smile. There was almost certainly no reason to mistrust him, just because he started the conversation. Surely. But... one could never be certain, really. However, one could appear to be very convincingly trusting.

"Hi! I'm Lan." He smiled and held out his hand to shake. "I've been here a little while, but I'm from Southern originally. Welcome."

"Yeah?" Yaeghar said, thrusting his hands into the tepid water of the sink. "You were Searched by an Eastern dragon down in Southern? 'Cuz I was Searched by an Eastern dragon and they said it was their territory and I had to come to Eastern, if I was going to any Weyr. Or something like that." He tossed another grin over his shoulder. "I don't really get it though. I mean, they found me over in East Bay but *I* don't really have a territory myself, so to speak. I'm a sailor. Whaddya do, Lanny?"

"I was Searched by Southern dragons from a hold that looks to Southern," explained Lan, doing his best not to sound terribly unhappy about that hold, "but there was a flood at Southern's hatching cavern, and they brought the eggs here. We came over here to Stand, and when the others went home, I decided to stay." He left out the part about the cavern collapsing and squishing Southern's gold egg, along with several others. "And, uh... I'm a healer," he added. "Apprentice."
