A common redpoll visited our feeders for about 10 min this afternoon.
I wasted 5 min realizing that it wasn't a Cassins finch, another few
minutes failing to find it in local bird guides and switching to
Petersons, so by the time I realized I should grab the camera it was
gone. It joined a flock of around 50 siskins, more than our usual
crowd. I will keep an eye out for it, but it may have just been
passing through. It was just a bit larger than the siskins, too small
for a Cassin's, had the distinctive bright red cap on the forehead,
and a light streak above the eye. No streaking on breast or belly.
Our more ordinary birds include a pair of whIte-headed woodpeckers
that nest next door, a pair of Hairy's, a pair of northern flickers,
lots of Clark's nutcrackers, Eurasian collared doves, only a few
chIckadees and nuthatches, one Stellar's jay and a pair of ravens.
Also, evening grosbeaks. The house is uphill from the village, near
Canyon Crest and Horseshoe drive.
