California Bird Atlas Big Weekend Kicks Off TOMORROW

From June 4–7, birders across the state will take part in the inaugural California Bird Atlas Big Weekend — a statewide effort to document California’s birds and the breeding behaviors that help us better understand and protect them.

Here’s how you can join Big Weekend:

Join an event.
Attend a field trip, guided bird walk, workshop, or other birding event near you. View the statewide roster of California Bird Atlas Big Weekend events here.

Atlas anywhere in California.
You don’t need to attend an event to participate. Document breeding birds wherever you are — from remote habitats to backyards, balconies, neighborhood parks, farms, wetlands, beaches, forests, and city streets.

New to the California Bird Atlas?
You’re still invited! Big Weekend is a great time to get started. Join the CBA eBird project here, then head outside June 4–7 and submit your checklists through eBird.

Introducing Blockboard

Curious where your atlasing will provide the most value? CBA is excited to introduce a new tool for exploring blocks. Blockboard is a one-stop dashboard for tracking progress in any block, including overall survey effort and which species still lack breeding evidence.

The dashboard will update daily as new Atlas data comes in, making it easier to see where progress is happening and where more coverage is needed.

Watch our explainer video for a short introduction here.

Thank You

Thank you for your time, expertise, photos, field notes, encouragement, and generosity. California Bird Atlas is YOU.

As a nonprofit, California Bird Atlas relies on community support to sustain this work over the next several years. We're grateful for financial contributions of all sizes, which can be made here.

More soon!
