Hi,
A few days ago I met with Bonnie Noles. Months ago she had told me she
had a beautiful dead bird in her freezer she couldn't figure out. I
finally had a look at it, and low and behold, it's a WOOD THRUSH!
Kudos to Bonnie for not throwing it away, and for recognizing it as
something worth saving!! She found it late last fall in front of her
house, located on 395 south of the Mono Inn.
It's always fun to stuff rare birds, so I left it out of the freezer
and prepared it later that day. Couldn't believe I had a WOTH sitting
on the kitchen table from Mono.
As far as the date, she said it was after Don Banta left the area, for
she wanted to show it to him. I spoke with him last night about that
and the CBC. I couldn't get much specific, but sounds like he annually
leaves for Thankgiving, and comes back for Xmas before leaving for the
winter. So it's probably from last year late November, but a confirmed
date is unknown.
Wowsers!
It was a hatch year female, with very little skull ossification.
