David Gaines Jon Dunn and Yellow-billed Loons

I was very lucky to be with Jon Dunn when he found the Yellow-billed Loon few days back. Later in the day he shared  this  story with Sally Miller and I. Jon told us the loon was not the first county record, David Gaines had the only other a  long time ago probably in the 70`s.   The record was rejected, Jon voted to reject it too but had some reservations about his decision, Sometime recently Jon revisited  David`s  record and showed other people that decide if a record is valid.  It was a slam dunk approval!

Iding  any YBLO can be tough even if you know it's around

David found one unexpectedly and with  binos and probably a camera that is far from what most of us use today

Great find David!!   Thanks to Jon for re visiting  David`s  rejected record!

I never had the privilege  to have met David  but i I often think of him when I drive by Smokey Bear Flats where i believe Dave lost his life in a car accident  in a blizzard.   

Belated thanks David Gaines for the life you lived and the legacy you left ....
