School Delays Inspire More Youth Sailing
|
The delay of the school year is frustrating for many, on many levels; however, for sailors, it means an extension of summer! In response
to the extra time for recreational activities, Sail Newport has added a wide range of both non-competitive and race training youth sailing opportunities.
NEW FALL NON-COMPETITIVE SAILING OPPORTUNITIES:
Dinghy sailing will be offered to youth sailors on weekday mornings and afternoons aged seven and older. The instruction will be scheduled
to start during the week of August 24. Students will participate in small groups of up to three to four students in the same age and skill group. This unique opportunity is for sailors to further their skills and spend more time on the water.
To register interest in the program, please email
headins...@sailnewport.org.
Include your child's age, skill level, and we will follow up to help schedule this extra instruction.

NEW FALL YOUTH RACE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Most of the race training programs start immediately and continue through the fall. There are options for Opti Green Fleet sailors and
racing Opti, Laser, and Club 420 sailors. Also, a brand new program, "Introduction to High School Sailing," will be offered for those interested in sharpening their scholastic 420 skills. Check the link below for registration and more information.

First Annual Newport Dinghy Regatta

|
The Newport Regatta was reorganized this year over two weekends to uphold social distancing and sports guidelines. All dinghy racing will
take place at the end of August and will also include Etchells. Although we can't hold socials this year, the two days of racing promises to be fast, frequent, and fun. Invited classes will include VX One, Laser (Full and Radial), Thistle, 505, and Etchells.
The Etchells class will have the opportunity for more racing before the summer wraps up. Get registered and get out on the water!

people on this journey to lessen our collective impact on the environment by making small adjustments in our lives - because, with each day, we are racing together against time. This

Sail for Hope - Plan to Sail
September 12
|
Get your crew together for the annual "Last Blast Around the Island." Whether you're an avid racer or not, this event is for everyone
in boats over 21'. This legendary race has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for people in need, and this year we're expecting a huge turnout. We can't hold a social due to COVID-19, but we can still show our patriotism and raise funds for great causes.
Also, save the date for next year's 20th Anniversary "Sail for Pride,"
which will be epic. (Image left taken by Tim Rich in 2011 at the inaugural Sail for Pride. Firefighters riding on

One of the joys of sailing is exploring marine life and the ocean. Students from the MLK, Jr. Center gazed at the water during their sailing
outing last week. Sail Newport hosts the MLK, Jr. Center and many other community groups to get children on sailboats and out on the water.
Thank you to donor 11th Hour Racing for their support of this and other sailing programs at Sail Newport.

Newport Police Dept. Youth Sailing

“I’ve never been on a boat before!” “I’ve never been on the ocean before!”
exclaimed children about to board a J/22 sailboat at Sail Newport.
The group of children from Aquidneck Island enjoyed sailing outings as part of the Newport Police Department Community Outreach Program.
The visit to Sail Newport was part of a free one-week program that the NPD community officers created for youth ages 8-12.
NPD Lieutenant April Amaral says the goal of the program is for children to will build their skills, broaden their experiences with new
activities, challenge them to learn new things, and just have FUN!

From a Youth Program mom
(And thank you to our superb youth instructor staff!)
"We just wanted to thank you and the Sail Newport staff for all the extra work you put in to keep the youth sailing program going
this summer... And after the long months of indoor “sheltering” and distance learning, the chance to be outside every day on the boat with other kids nearby made it even more fantastic than usual. You are amazing!

For a short time this season, boats may dock at Sail Newport outside of organized events. We have affordable dock space available for
one, two, or multiple nights. Electric and water services are also available. Come and make a trip to Newport. Stroll Fort Adams and visit downtown Newport for dinner. The water taxis stop right at our piers. This is a special circumstance and likely won't
be in place next year, so now is the time to sail to Newport! (Powerboats welcome too.)
