Well Deck my halls, GOOD BEER Fans!
What's this? Two East End Brewing newsletters in two months? Okay,
maybe it's been three months. But it's been three newsletters too, if
you count that accidental re-send of the last newsletter a little
while back. (whoopsie) But enough quibbling. I can promise you that
this will be your LAST GOOD BEER News of 2010, so be thankful for that
- or - stop and savor the moment, depending upon your perspective.
We've got a bunch of important GOOD BEER news to share! Such as...
- Exactly when and where can I get my Growler filled this Holiday
Season?
- What's the best way to treat my darkness-induced seasonal
depression, and when does that Festival of Darkness thing begin?
- What's the best beer-strategy for handling that thirsty Uncle who
brings "junk beer" to the family gathering, and spends the whole time
drinking your GOOD BEER?
- Haven't heard from the "Comfort and Joy" department of East End
Brewing in a while. Are they still in operation?
...And loads more. Let's get started!
FIRST, WHEN AND WHERE YOU CAN GET GOOD BEER (HOLIDAY HOURS):
Let me start off by saying that this is a little complicated. I think
we have a decent grasp of when you like to buy beer around the
holidays ("almost always" is generally a good answer). But we also
have "Marketing Hours" like we see in the Strip, where you tend to
shop a little differently...or so we've noticed. So to best
accommodate you, we're keeping TWO SETS of Holiday Hours for these
locations this Holiday Season, one set for the Brewery, another for
the Growler Shop. I figure the best way to lay this out to you is day
by day, one location at a time...
HOLIDAY GROWLER HOURS at the BREWERY:
12/21 Tue 5-7pm
12/22 Wed 5-7pm
12/23 Thu 5-7pm
12/24 Fri CLOSED for Christmas Eve
12/25 Sat CLOSED for Christmas Day
12/28 Tue 5-7pm
12/29 Wed 5-7pm
12/30 Thu 5-7pm
12/31 Fri OPEN NEW YEAR'S EVE 4-8pm
1/1 Sat OPEN NEW YEAR'S DAY 12-5pm
1/2/11 Regular Growler Hours resume... until late November of next
year.
HOLIDAY GROWLER HOURS in the GROWLER SHOP in the Strip:
12/22 Wed 9-5pm
12/23 Thu 9-5pm
12/24 Fri 9-3pm on Christmas Eve
12/25 Sat CLOSED
12/26 Sun CLOSED
12/29 Wed 9-5pm
12/30 Thu 9-5pm
12/31 Fri 9-3pm on NEW YEAR'S EVE
1/1 Sat CLOSED
1/2 Sun CLOSED
1/7/11 Regular Growler Hours at the shop resume, but with WINTER
HOURS...
WINTER HOURS AT THE GROWLER SHOP:
Starting in January, the Pittsburgh Public Market is moving to "Winter
Hours". This may pinch your plans for that Friday after-work Growler
fill-up a bit, so we're opening early so you have a better chance of
stopping in during your lunch hour. Or for breakfast. Usual
Pittsburgh Public Market rules apply - come hungry, come thirsty,
leave with too much to carry. Here's the Winter Hours for The Growler
Shop starting January 7th.
Fridays 9-3pm
Saturdays 9-5pm
Sundays 12-3pm (Sorry breakfast beer lovers. PLCB says no beer sales
before noon for us on Sundays)
SPEAKING OF HOLIDAYS, WHAT'S MORE COMFORTABLE AND JOYOUS THAN BEER?
You may not have noticed, but the little elves in our Comfort and Joy
Fulfillment Department of East End Brewing have been working round the
clock, getting all those presents sent out in time for the big gift
giving season. (My somewhat diminutive wife who runs the webstore
will really appreciate being referred to as an elf!) While the
arrive-by-Christmas window has all but closed, we can still get those
Gift Certificates, Growler Subscriptions, T-shirts, Knit Hats, and
Growler Bags sent out in time to be a part of the season, if only a
little belatedly. (Yes, I said belatedly. Don't take that tone with
me. It's the holidays! It's a real word - look it up yourself.)
To put an order in with my most favorite elf of all time, click here:

as soon as we can!
FESTIVAL OF DARKNESS UPDATE:
In case you missed it, we had a Eye Opener Coffee Porter release at
The Commonplace coffee company's shop in Squirrel Hill, quickly
followed by a BIG FAT Festival of Darkness release day at the brewery
a little over a week later - AND a pretty massive turnout. Thanks
everyone! With the release of these last two beers, we have now
brought our F.O.D. into full swing, with all of these DARK offerings
available at the brewery right now, in either bottles or Growlers:
- Fat Gary Nut Brown Ale
- Black Strap Stout
- Snow Melt Winter Ale
- Steelcut Oatmeal Stout (turned out to be more of a Black IPA, or so
the consensus of the room at the release says)
- (the beer we can't call) Eye Opener Coffee Porter
- Homewood Reserve 2010 (our best Homewood Reserve yet, I'm happy to
say!)
- Illustration Ale (last couple of cases!)
GRATITUDE UPDATE:
We brewed our Gratitude Barleywine nice and early this year, with the
odd notion of releasing a 2010 vintage withing calendar year 2010.
That's just NUTS you say? Well, I guess you were right. It's looking
like a mid/late January release day for this, our next to last color
year on the Roy G Biv spectrum. We'll firm up the release date for
this indigo-waxed just as soon as we can get the labels on the
bottles... which will probably be next week. Volunteers at the ready!
REVERSE KEG RIDE RESULTS:
It's probably a little too cold right now for most of us to think
about riding a bike. But this weather makes the day of the Reverse
Keg Ride seem downright balmy, with a temperature of 35F. We still
had nearly a hundred people come out for this snow-free ride, and we
managed to safely get the empty kegs back to the brewery without a
hitch. And in the process, we raised some nice dough for a local
charity that does great work! Read more about it, and check out the
photos of how it all went here:
http://www.eastendbrewing.com/node/874
While the chilly weather kept the numbers down, this ride was an
important step in the evolution of The Keg Ride. As an event that's
taken on a life of it's own, it has grown to the point of needing to
go legit. Between the on-line registration, simplified check in, and
marshaled ride, it all worked beautifully... a great dry run (Get it?
Empty kegs - dry run?) for what will be our first "Legit" Keg Ride in
the Spring. And from the looks of our preliminary planning, it's
going to be incredible. We just need to wait another 4-5 months for
it to come around.
THE OTHER GRATITUDE UPDATE:
We already talked about the Gratitude Barleywine, but I want to offer
you some other gratitude too. This has been another incredible year
for all of us at East End Brewing. (Okay, I mean ALL of us in that
REAL sense this time.) Capacity expansions at the brewery,
significant quality improvements in all our beers, a new thriving
Growler Shop in the Strip, extended Growler Hours at the brewery, so
many new tap spots, a First Place slot in the City Paper's Best of
category for locally made drink, and enough Growler fills this year to
allow us to brew even more one-time Session Ales than ever
before...It's all made for a pretty amazing year.
And from the look of things, 2011 will be an even BIGGER year for East
End Brewing. Of course we'll have loads of new beers rolling out,
some old favorites, some new favorites, and with any luck, some beers
to challenge your ideas of what beer can be. (Including a special 6th
Anniversary brew that we hope to have ready for Gratitude Release
Day.) But mostly, we've got big expansion plans in the works for
2011, which should open up all sorts of possibilities for our future.
While it's easy for us to get caught up in the day to day details of
running the place, it's important to take a moment, look back, and
thanks everyone who helped make it happen. And of course, that's
you...You and your incredible support for this little local beer-
making operation. I can't possibly thank you enough for what your
support means for us. It truly is an incredible gift!
From all of us at East End Brewing, have a wonderful holiday - filled
with friends, family, and just enough GOOD BEER to help you get
through it!
Cheers,
Scott
