I personally think that is not much better than previous idea. I didn't move to Preston Drive to live off of Rte 5.
I picture Preston Drive being widened, with cement retaining walls along the east side of the road. There will be at leat two stop light added, at the entrance and at 91 North. The intersection of East Main/Preston Ave and Baldwin / Bee wiil become super congested because of the added traffic. I've been to Evergreen Walk and I don't want to live there!

I've always known that there will be the added traffic of housing. Commercial development is different.
Say good-bye to the quiet corner of the East Side!

I'd have to agree with Peter as well,

their list of "Permitted uses by right" start off with retail, that's simply unacceptable to me, as I know this simply means a Walmart. We turned out and turned this down a few years ago, and offered the east main st location that was vacant as an alternative. I believe at that time we were told by the mayor that "they didn't want it" well its developed now so I guess someone DID want it. I'll be there for this on the 20th and I'd ask that people turn out if you can. A strong turn out is a strong early message to the committee.

I too agree with these comments.  The history is that the Master Plan was changed (maybe about 10 years ago?) to allow for a rezoning.  Does anyone on this distribution know the regulations and on what legal basis we can petition the Economic Development Board or the Zoning Board to not change the zoning?

Although I won't be able to attend on Tuesday because of a prior commitment, Paula Helyer and I did attend the Conservation Committee Meeting on March 31 because the Record indicated that the Hall Farm was on the agenda.  Turned out that was old information and although it wasn't on the agenda, the Committee graciously allowed us to speak at the end of their relatively brief meeting.  They seemed very open to our concerns, but at the end of the day, told us that numbers of people at the meetings send a strong message.

I hope that someone will summarize what happens at theEconomic Development meeting on 4/20 for those of us who cannot attend.

"We may not have a continuous town history of unbroken local
government, but our homes have been laid in a country of lovely hills
and vales, and our eyes are confronted by as beautiful a landscape as
can be found in Connecticut..." I think as an executive for
International Silver 1906, George Munson Curtis would have agreed
there are locations suited for commercial use and others areas that
should be reserved for peaceful neighborhoods, especially given the
natural beauty of Meriden's hills.

Much has been done to tarnish the landscape since Curtis spoke these
words -- and a zone change on the east side certainly has the
potential to do more of the same -- despite the good intentions of our
city's leaders. Driving a Preston Ave sunset after a long workday
helps soothe the soul and could be lost forever. I am encouraged by
the renewed fighting spirit of our neighbors and hope that as many as
possible will turn out on Tuesday and make your concerns known.

Thanks,

Dave
