As I'm sure you read in today's Record-Journal, the new Interstate
Development District zone was approved by the city's Economic
Development Committee last night. Thanks to all those who attended
the meeting, unfortunately the disappointing number of empty seats did
not help our cause.

We are down to the final week in the process as the full City Council
will likely vote for passage on Monday, June 21. This will no longer
be zoned residential. We can now write and call our local councilors
to voice our concerns. Please visit the city's website for contact
details (http://www.cityofmeriden.org/CMS/default.asp?CMS_AreaID=23 --
All of the councilors are listed on the left side.) If you are
opposed to a significant increase in the decibel levels, traffic
volume, and widening of our streets here on the east side of Meriden,
you must reach out and let these folks know that they will lose your
vote in the future if they push this through.

Also, the best way to make a difference is to write letters to the
editor. As a reminder, I have posted the R-J guidelines along with
recent letters you can use to help you make your case. (Upload these
from the "Files" section). Time is short so you must act now; we only
have a couple of days.

There are appx 120 families receiving these monotonous emails, and for
some reason the level of concern has not been as high as when there
was a threat for Wal-Mart boxes moving in back in 2004. You should
note that these new regulations define a Big Box as 90,000 square feet
or more. This means conceivably, a commercial building of 80,000
square feet(!) would be ok as per these regulations. Recent news
reports have noted that Wal-Mart is planning on "smaller locations" in
their latest expansion strategy, and you can be certain they still
remember this plot of land is here.
e3i4811cd742d860d938e2483531362794b)

Just because there may not be hideous-looking box stores does not mean
the same quality-of-life issues will not be a factor when this mixed
use retail development takes shape. Roads will still need to be
widened to handle the holiday traffic, traffic lights, buses for
workers and shoppers, concrete retaining walls holding the hill
together, more noise from I91 and I691 since the trees buffering the
noise today will be gone, delivery trucks rumbling through the late
night hours to supply these retails shops, etc., etc. will all be part
of our lives. And once the initial lustre fades, stores will struggle
given the huge glut of retail already in the market. Developers come
in and build for the big payday and move on to the next project while
the cities struggle to maintain. This site has been touted as
Meriden's "Evergreen Walk", and yet Evergreen Walk just lost their
anchor tenant this month because of a lack of surrounding economic
development.
http://articles.courant.com/2010-05-26/business/hc-highland-park-market-0527-20100526_1_south-windsor-jobs-at-other-stores-upscale-grocery-store

So...I know everyone is busy with their lives, in fact my job takes me
to Atlanta Monday. However, we need everyone possible to attend this
final meeting to let our council members know our views. Public
comment will be allowed prior to the meeting and I am hoping everyone
comes together -- despite the long odds we face. If we don't fill the
room like neighbors did for the auto auction, our leaders will think
we are generally ok with this.

At least if we all do our best we can sleep at night (despite the
noise) knowing that those who voted to scar the hanging hills like
they did with the power plant might eventually realize that Preston
Avenue was not the right place to build this complex, when downtown
Meriden would have been the courageous, and ideal, location for a
mixed use retail hub.

Thanks for listening and please tell your friends and neighbors. I'm
done cryin'!

Peace,

Dave

I plan to make a few large signs to post at the end of Preston Drive and
throughout the neighborhood.
Maybe that will help.

Be careful about the mailbox thing. You have to put it outside the  mailbox. If you get a nasty mailman he collects them all and then you get a call from the postmaster! I had this happen to me when we were organizing a neighborhood block party. Welcome to the US Postal Nazis!
I’ve got 50 printed off and will hit most of Preston Drive, Alexander and all those streets in my neighborhood. I will try to get to Winding Brook as I have a few friends over there.

If we don’t flood the place, we’re toast!

Good luck. I have to go and make signs.

Christine,

If you put together a flyer, can you send it to all so that we don't duplicate efforts.  I would be happy to stuff mail boxes along my section of Preston Ave (btwn I-91 and Hall's house - gee should I give him one?) and Preston Ave extension.

I made four large outdoor signs and two small ones.

They pretty much read:

"Say NO to the MALL @ HALL FARM
Council Votes Monday 6 pm
BE THERE!!!

If anyone has a property that has high visabiltiy let me know. I live at 91 Preston Drive and can give them to you.
They are at least 5 feet high and 2 feet wide. They stand long and tall.

Let me know.

I put out 50 flyers in Tanglewood tonight, need to print up more. Will get more out asap.

I hope we can kill this. I called all the SOBs and emailed them all.
Mattie Dominello's phone number doesn't hook up and neither does Shamock's.
COWARDS ALL!!!

Unless we have a couple of hundred people who are angry at that meeting we're doomed.

For mapping purposes, I did lower Preston from Parker to East Main, I also left several in the receptacle @ Villa East Estates at the suggestion of Bob Squire who lives there and knows the history of the City’s bad decisions regarding redevelopment, and I did Parker.  I did speak to several people and I left a brochure/leaflet at the convenience store on the corner of East Main and Preston.  I’m going to do a few more, i.e. Valley View Dr area.

If you can pick up the rest, I can spend my time this weekend making signs of protest for people to hold at the meeting and more street signs.

Interesting...the newspaper article yesterday mentioned public comment at 630 and the writer did not get that detail from us.

I wonder if it is no longer on the agenda? My understanding is the council HAS to allow public comment on items on that week's agenda -- especially an item with such huge ramifications on the community. Sounds like we may need to get a lawyer.

In the meantime let's be prepared and assume they will come to their senses and allow public comment.

Laurie actually read the statute that they made her put up on chambers. So much for representation!

I spoke to Laurie.  It is on the agenda under Economic Development.  She also stated that it is a state statute, because they already had public comment on the Economic Development meeting.  They will have a flyer outlining the statute.

Although there won't be public comment, I think it extremely important that everyone shows up.

Just had a slightly caustic conversation with Shamock. He's absolutely voting for this. He asked me how would the fill the defecit without going bankrupt and a told him to freeze all tea hers, cops and city worker's wages! God forbid. I told him that the move government takes the more they spend and he was just filling the trough!
