I have found that law enforcement and the Town have been somewhat helpful
when I've raised concern about the speeders on Thorpe Avenue where I live.
They mentioned that their availability to put officers on our street was
difficult due to their limited resources of men and time.
I did get the police to recommend to the Meriden Transportation Department
to add new "25mph" signs added to locations I suggested on the street. It
improved things somewhat though neighbors are still bothered by the
speeders. I think that police blinking "your speed" signs during peak
periods and actual ticketing speed traps are the best alternatives. We

My observation again is a lack of general driver adequate & consideration shown by folks driving through the neighborhood & our fellow neighbors. Just try pulling onto Baldwin Avenue & see who’ll let you out including our known neighbors. Several years ago, I had a car drive through the fence of my front yard. The driver would had injured or killed my daughter had I not taken her to school on my way to work that morning. The police later located the driver that resided in our neighborhood at the time.
In a prior incident, a driver collided with a tree that once stood in my front yard. I’m hearing much about speeding but there are other equally dangerous conditions including the “hump” resulting in a blind spot on Baldwin Ave for all drivers not just residents of the neighborhood in addition to the overall condition of the road & collision objects (storm sewers & man-holes) that pose additional hazards to drivers & pedestrians.
For a period of time, with my permission a police car was parked in my driveway handing out tickets to offenders. It helped while drivers know there was a police care in the area. I’m not sure they’re a single good answer, perhaps a couple traffic light or stop signs strategically placed???

I work 3-11 between East Main Street and 691 all the way to the Middlefield border. I will do some speed enforcement close to those areas and will request it for Baldwin and Thorpe from the Post Officers that handle that area.

Can Preston Ave be added? In the 30+ years I have lived on this street, I have never seen anyone pulled over for speeding. Law enforcement vehicles heading to the Police Academy and the many semis that shortcut down Preston to Research Parkway take incredible liberties with speed.

Hi all,
Regarding the speeding issues, just my two cents:
What has best slowed me down are the small tent signs that say “Drive Like Your Kids Live Here” -- maybe we start with a bunch of those along the roadside; it might be more effective than repetitive and more expensive speed limit signs.
Also, I don’t think neighbors want flashing warning lights hitting their windows at night.
Taking the long controversial hump out of Baldwin Ave would - in my view - actually allow for faster driving and cost a fortune. Easy for me to say though; I don’t live on the blind side of that hump.
Don’t let me discourage anyone from meeting. Any other issues out there?

I will be working Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon from 3-11pm I can attempt a meeting between calls for service and would be happy to be a part of it. Perhaps you could start a list of Complaints and another list of Ideas to improve the area and or complaints?
It is difficult to get a personal meeting these days. Emails, like we are doing, are also very valuable and will work if the meeting does not happen.
