Bus Stops #13076 & #13077 on CO Blvd & 6th Ave

Hello,

The bus stops #13076 & #13077 on CO Blvd at 6th Ave are dangerous.

The northbound stop #13076 shelter was struck & destroyed by a vehicle. It was never replaced.
The southbound stop #13077 is on an island between the slip lane & busy vehicle traffic on CO Blvd.

Requesting for BOTH stops to be relocated prior to the intersection & for shelters to be installed 10 or more feet from the vehicle travel lane on CO Blvd.

This will require eliminating the slip lane from Northbound CO Blvd onto 6th Ave, which we did successfully at 17th Ave.

Doing so will create a safe place for riders to wait.

I'm asking for the Council Offices of Sawyer & Hinds to be the point of contact for each, since multiple agencies will be involved.

I don't believe I ever received a response from anyone.

I requested for the bus stops on CO Blvd at 6th to be relocated. It's also worth noting that neither stop currently has a shelter, since the North bound side was destroyed by a vehicle.

Who manages that stop?

Can they replace the shelter, but could it be relocated south of 6th Ave prior to it being reinstalled?

For both directions, we could utilize the current & former slip lane space to install a shelter.

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for following up on this item. I was able to get the following information back from staff:

 

• The current stops on Colorado Blvd at 6^th Ave are situation far-side/past 6^th Ave, which is the current RTD standard for corridors of this size and volume. Changing locations as suggested may require a change in running time for the routes serving these stops. Additionally, the northbound stop 13076 serves Route 6 as it turns from westbound 6^th Ave Pkwy to northbound Colorado Blvd. This stop cannot be located south of 6^th Ave Pkwy without adding an additional stop on 6^th Ave Pkwy to accommodate transfers between Route 6 and the northbound Route 40

 

• Both stops are in the City and County of Denver’s right of way and there is no outside entity specifically designated to maintain the stops

 

• The shelter was an ad-company owned shelter and the shelter was removed some time ago. The vasty majority of bus stop amenities are installed by an outside party—often advertising companies. In the absence of a third-party identifying the site for a structure, there is only one other option to get a structure formally built and maintained. That would be for RTD to establish a shelter and the agency has very limited resources to invest in these types of projects. RTD is in the midst of a Bus Stop Infrastructure and Accessibility Assessment that should conclude later this spring. A next step from that study will likely be to develop a process to identify which stops are most deserving of investments by the agency for amenities.  

 

• The Colorado Department of Transportation is planning to improve travel on parts of Colorado Boulevard through implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service between I-70 and the Southmoor transit station south of Hampden Avenue. This project will greatly alter all stops along the project corridor, and is currently in design alternatives phase in preparation for community feedback.
