Also, I think its important that we have someone connect with DOTI on this...

Based on the Denver Moves Bikes Update, we're currently recommending bike lanes on 12th Ave to the East of Lincoln.

I feel that needs to be changed to a recommendation for a Neighborhood Bikeway.

If we're able to extend the 12th Avenue Neighborhood Bikeway from Speer Blvd East of Broadway, then perhaps a portion of that budget could be allocated to pouring concrete pads for the bus stops being relocated from 12th to 11th.

Yes, there will be a slight time delay traveling a block South, but I feel that time will be made up on 11th over 12th AND we can ideally get the route plowed once that change is made.

I hope this is something that DOTI & RTD can execute together.

Thanks again for your help with this!

Respectfully,

Thank you for your response, Kelsie.

Could you please have someone go look at the route? I think tomorrow morning might be a good time to see the issues after a snowfall.

I feel this could be a really good option...
- Most stops won't need to be constructed as they're already paved. A simple relocation of the signpost & bench is all that would be needed.
- I don't feel that a block is "close" for someone with limited mobility & I feel the distance is why people don't make the transfer now.
- As for bike conflicts, there are more of them now on 12th where we only have Sharrows to the West of Clayton. Routing the 10 route down to 11th would help alleviate those conflicts while providing more space on 11th for the bus & bike commuters to use the space together. This would be similar to 12th Ave from Madison to Clayton, which I bike frequently & don't observe conflicts at all.
- There is also the issue with the route being cleared of snow & ice. If we shift the 10 route down to 11th, perhaps we can get DOTI to elevate this new route from Priority B to Priority A on the snow plow map. This will help get both the bus route & the unprotected bike lanes cleared of snow & ice.
I've asked Chris Nicholson & Chris Hinds to follow-up with RTD for delay & crash data on the 10 route relative to the 6 route. I've observed buses getting stuck consistently or when they don't get stuck, the drivers are stopping in the lane & not pulling to the stop at all. This is an ADA Compliance issue.
- DOTI has plans to close 12th to vehicle traffic at Speer Blvd & Elati, and identify it as a Neighborhood Bikeway to Broadway. Unfortunately, there currently aren't plans to connect the neighborhood bikeway East of Broadway. I believe this is due to the 10 Route. Rerouting it down to 11th will then allow 12th to be identified as a neighborhood bikeway East of Broadway & perhaps install a diverter at Lincoln, similar to Bayaud.

RTD & DOTI should consider such a reroute for the reasons outlined above.

Hi Bryan,

We appreciate your comment regarding Route 10. RTD has looked at transfers between Route 10 and Route 12 and found that very few passengers make this transfer. For those that do make this transfer, the current Route 10 and Route 12 stops are very close to each other. Operating Route 10 on 11th avenue would introduce additional turn movements to the route, which increases running time. Stop locations would need to be identified and constructed which would be costly, and there would be significant concerns about bike conflicts. RTD is not considering such a reroute at this time due to the reasons outlined above.

Subject: Re: Shift the RTD 10 Route down to 11th Ave West of Corona/Downing - Make 12th Ave a Neighborhood Bikeway

Hello,

Just following up on this...
There was a crash at 12th Ave & Pearl Street recently.
(Images removed for size)

Gives more justification to make 12th a Neighborhood Bikeway somehow.

Can we install diverters on each side of Cheesman Park & one off Lincoln heading East?

Is there a way to do this while still permitting bus access?

I still think shifting the 10 Route down to 11th is better, but if we can install diverters that permit bus through access, then great!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello,

Requesting that the RTD 10 Route be shifted from 12th down to 11th Ave West of Downing/Corona.

It will better split the difference between the Colfax BRT & the 6 Route, allowing the existing stops on Downing/Corona that act as transfers to the 12 Route, reducing the need for those with limited mobility to try to walk or roll to the other stops.

11th is also wider in that part of Cap Hill making it better suited for a bus route. We can also then focus on getting the 10 Route cleared of snow & ice making that route a designated snow route for bikes as well.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
