Cannot Get STATIONXML from Basalt

Dear Support,

I have connected a Kinemetrics Basalt device to SeisComP using the RockToSeedLink module. Real-time data is streaming fine via port 18000, and I can access the device with telnet and slinktool.

However, I cannot retrieve STATIONXML metadata. The web interface has “Enable XML Configuration” checked, but accessing:

 http://192.168.88.13/config.xml returns:

error on line 13: Extra content at the end of the document

I need STATIONXML for SeisComP inventory. Is there any way to export it from Basalt or generate it using existing tools?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Nail Gaziyev

Hi Nail,
The config.xml on the Basalt is not a StationXML file. It is essentially a copy of the configuration settings for the Basalt. As far as I am aware, Basalt’s do not generate StationXML files.

Hi Nicholas, Kevin,

Thank you for your replies.

Let me reframe the question more clearly:

  • I can connect to the Basalt device using telnet and slinktool over port 18000.

  • The connection is successful and streams are visible.

However, in order to properly integrate this station into SeisComP, I need one of the following metadata formats:

  • STATIONXML,

  • dataless SEED, or

  • RESP file.

Is there any way to export this metadata from the Basalt device — or any tool provided by Kinemetrics — to generate these formats based on its internal configuration?

Best regards,
Nail Gaziyev

Your question really seems more specific about the features and/or capabilities of the Basalt which is a Kinemetrics device. It might be best to contact kmi support via wiki.kmi.com.

With that said though, most of the information stored on a Rock device regarding configs and other system info can typically be found in the /usr/rock/SMARTSDist directory on the device itself. Perhaps it is located there. Although I have not used RockTalk extensively, it may have that feature to download/create a station.xml file as well. Earthworm is just a message broker. It's purpose is to retrieve, process and send near real-time waveform data received from an instrument. At my organization, we utilize other tools to retrieve extra information from devices such as Nagios/Icinga or ANSS-SIS to pull in SOH or other station information or to generate station.xml/dataless.

Hi, you need a dataless file, use PDCC software, you export the result file in xml format.

Or you can use gempa SMP to create the corresponding xml file.
