Hello everybody,

Probably this is more a seismological question.

I want to use a personal associator (or in earthworm terminology a "binder").
I need the PICK stream data and get the P arrival and S arrival, and after reading the PICK format, there is a blank space that is not used and it is suggested to put P or S. (but not used!).

So, in  the PICK ring there are arrival times but the attribute P or S is not used?. How binder works without knowing if the phase is P or S ?

Can anybody explain in a simple way how it works?

Regards.

Hi!
To my understanding, a pick is just a pick. There is no information about S or P on the pick.
In fact, documentation says: binder_ew - associator for EW. Combines picks into an event and assigns PHASES (P & S).

So it is binder job to determine the type of pick. You have some options like no_S_on_ Z to tell binder not to associate S phases on HHZ channels.
