Hello there Earthworm Forum,

I thought I'd share with you a version of an operating system I have developed. In using earthworm I usually prototype a lot so I'm usually re-installing and operating system and re-installing Earthworm. I have then developed a remastered version of an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that contains Earthworm and other packages. Files used to create a basic node are already included in the home directory and startstop can run directly from the terminal. I understand that not too many people like 'Unity' so I swapped that out with gnome right from the start. Need a new node? Create a new user. All you need to add is your configurations. Don't want to install? You can run it (complete with EW) directly from a USB or DVD. We use an even more heavily modded OS over at the PRSMP, any suggestions for package additions can be made here and I can add them in the next iteration.

Package Additions:
  • gnome-session-flashback
  • Vim
  • gcc
  • g++
  • gfortran
  • openssh
  • x11vnc
  • Java
  • Mail Utilities
  • Screen & Tmux
  • K2Status
Package Removals:
  • All games
  • Libre Office
  • Unity

I hope this might help people get started. If distributing it like this is somehow not permitted please inform me and I can take it down. Download at the link (anonymous ftp):

ftp://ftp.prsmp.uprm.edu/Public/Ubuntu-Earthworm_Edition/

Direct link: ftp://ftp.prsmp.uprm.edu/Public/Ubuntu-Earthworm_Edition/Ubuntu-Earthworm.iso

As always credits go to ISTI and the EW Community.

Thanks,

Francisco.

Francisco,

Thanks for the info.  How different is Ubuntu vs CentOS Linux systems?

Mark

Hello Mark,

Well, both are Linux operating systems with very similar characteristics.

Similarities:
  • Both are Linux/GNU Operating Systems and see very little differences in performance.
  • Both have similar tools to manage packages. (Ubuntu uses apt-get, CentOS uses yum).
  • You can compile the same sources in both, in the event a package does not exist.
Differences:
  • Based on different OS: Debian -> Ubuntu; Red Hat Enterprise -> CentOS.
  • Backed by different entities: Canonical -> Ubuntu; CentOS by the CentOS Community.
  • Differences in the user interfaces and settings.
  • Packages have different but similar names.
In conclusion they are both great systems and I guess the real difference is the name. I prefer Ubuntu simply because it is the GNU/Linux OS I first used and know how to work with and seems simpler to use. I choose Ubuntu 14.04 LTS because security and kernel updates are guarantied for 5 years and packages are usually updated to the newest versions of the software. I know how to remaster Ubuntu and Debian-Based OS very easily and I can add any package or features on the fly. It allows us over at the PRSMP to remain consistent as all the installs are the same. I when it comes to choosing an OS it's all in what you prefer.

Hi

Did you create a .deb for earthworm? That would be really useful to me.

thanks
Philip

I have been planning to, including a Personal Package Archive (ppa) so that it can be easily added via apt-get and updated automatically. I'll see if I can have it done by the next month or so.

Hey Bob,

Yeah, although I have a better script to just automate this now, instead of bundling it with the OS (I'll see if I can clean it up and share it). I also believe you can use this link:

As the ISTI guys already package it for ubuntu.

Thanks,
Francisco.

Thanks Francisco.  The GPS 1024 week rollover issue is impacting me.  I suspect that the ISTI gurus will modify the Ubuntu distribution.

Bob
