Hello EwA Community,
Today is the last day of
National Invasive Species Week.
Numerous individuals and organizations across the country
, dedicated to
understanding the impact of various invasive species on our landscapes
and on our health
, were showcased.
Here in the Greater Boston area, we must continue our diligence in monitoring, documenting, remediating, and reporting invasive plant species. Please join us in this effort! Together, we can make a difference.
Here are some ways we can start preparing for spring:
Keep in mind the 4 R's of invasive plant management in urban spaces:
Record, Remove, Replant, and Report
Visit Earthwise Aware's
Guide to Common Invasive Species in Middlesex County and familiarize yourself with the early growth characteristics of common invasive plant species found in our region. This document also provides guidance for effective removal strategies
for several common invasive plants found in the Greater Boston Area.
When spring arrives, we will be ready to record our observations of invasive plants in our parks, streets, yards, gardens, and natural spaces. Check out EwA's
Invasive Flora Patrol (IFP) project to join the project and begin engaging in participatory science efforts to record invasive plants -- wherever you are!
Collection of long-term data is essential for effective management.
Stay tuned for IFP on-line tutorials and hands-on field training at
EwA's event calendar. We will have one of each coming up in a few weeks, in time to celebrate Earth Day!
Have a great weekend,
Jennifer
