Urban Wetlands, Shared Responsibility

Inside EwA’s 2025 Vernal Pool and Threatened Species Report

What better way to close the year than with a report that reflects the power of communities working together to protect our habitats? We are pleased to share the 2025 EwA Vernal Pool and Threatened Species Report, with new insights and updates available here.

This year marks the seventh successful season of the EwA Vernal Pool Awareness and Sensitive Species Protection Program. The report presents findings from our vernal pool documentation and threatened species monitoring in the Middlesex Fells and Horn Pond reservations.

It includes updates on pool certification progress, observations of key indicator species, and an overview of the conservation challenges facing these urban wetlands. It also shows how EwA participatory science tools and volunteer engagement are strengthening long term monitoring and habitat protection for amphibians, plants of conservation concern, and other wetland dependent wildlife.

Beyond vernal pools, the report highlights our work on a broader set of vulnerable species and habitats, including arthropods, pollinators, and plants of conservation concern. It also features initiatives such as EwA WildGuard, which addresses poaching, unauthorized collection, and other pressures on urban wildlife.

Looking ahead, EwA will continue to expand monitoring at the Fells, Horn Pond, and additional urban and suburban sites where seasonal wetlands are poorly documented and highly vulnerable. These data will help improve habitat connectivity, inform recreation management, and support stronger protections for sensitive ecosystems.

This work is only possible through the dedication of our volunteers and supporters, and through collaboration with partners including local conservation commissions, land managers, and scientific advisors. We thank you for your commitment and invite you to read the report, share it within your networks, and join us in upcoming field activities as we continue this stewardship together.
