Here's some recaps of another busy week at EwA and a few highlights of what's coming...
📸 So many great sightings again this week. If we have to pick one, that'd be Clio's observation of a North American racer (Coluber constrictor) sighted in Georgia. Impressive reptile that gets its name thanks to its speed! Usually active by day, they are among the fastest snakes. They can move at a speed of about 5.6 km (3.5 miles) per hour on the ground and through bushes. Racers need grasslands, shrublands, and other open habitats with low-to-no canopy. They thrive in and along the edges of young forests. If you want to help them, push for habitat management practices that keep large sunny patches of young forests and shrublands.
📊 Thanks to all for great biodiversity records this week! EwA naturalists added 383observations over 234 species this week. Curious about the records that have been validated by the iNat community so far? >here.
Running tally: 🏆 To date, we recorded 81,437 observations of 6,757 distinct species! Check our EwA umbrella project and see the details per site/observer & more... >here.
📅 EwA Coming Events
Field Events » Don't miss this Saturday's Forest Exploration at the Fells (9:30 am), and EwA's Introduction to Plant & Wildlife Monitoring for Conservation at the Growing Center (2pm). Space is limited for all our field events. Wildlife ethics is important to us and we seek to avoid putting pressure on natural habitats that large gatherings unavoidably do. We are asking our audience to register-and-commit to avoid no-shows (or cancel when you know you can't come) [Events details & registration].
Virtual Events » EwA Nature Hour(Sept, 7th - 12pm | webinar registration) » Don't miss learning about the Somerville Community Growing Centerat EwA's July virtual nature hour. We're delighted to host Paula Jordan who will talk about their mission and her work at the Center. Bring your lunch, hope on our zoom, and let's discuss the many ways to get closer to urban nature in our communities. [Read More...]
■ EwA Fieldwork (& Resources)
We are monitoring phenology and entomofauna weekly at all sites. Our biodiversity and habitat documentation fieldwork is also as healthy as ever thanks to our group of core citizen scientists who simply rock!
