Join us this Saturday for a Forest Exploration at the Middlesex Fells Reservation and experience the woods in early spring. As winter recedes, the landscape opens into a brief, dynamic window where lingering snow patches, thawing soils, and the first signs of plant growth reveal the forest’s quiet energy. Buds swell, early herbs push through leaf litter, and amphibians begin to move with the return of moisture and milder nights. These shifting conditions uncover tracks, movement patterns, and the fading structure of the subnivean world that is so often hidden. I do not know what Bill and Joe have planned, but I am especially eager to explore this transition, when winter structures give way and spring processes take hold. As always, the walk weaves natural history, ecology, and close observation, with time to pause and read the landscape carefully.
Early spring may seem quiet at first glance, yet EwA’s long-term records tell a different story. Our team has documented more than 419 species in the Fells during March alone, showing that life continues even at its most subtle and energy-efficient, now beginning to accelerate as the season unfolds.
Join us to slow down, sharpen your eye, and discover what the forest reveals as spring awakens. |
