Today, we're excited to announce the EwA Habitat Fragmentation Web Map Tutorial. The tutorial explains how to navigate the map product of EwA's Keeping the Middlesex Fells Whole project.
In short, the project documents habitat fragmentation in a mixed-use urban forest. This conservation initiative aims to provide a picture of human impacts on the Fells so that we can adequately balance its recreational and aesthetic value against the ecological needs of its many non-human residents.
One result is an interactive GIS map 🗺️ that the Friends of the Fells and the Department of Conservation and Recreation can use to inform conservation actions. Our data and framework can provide additional scientific value to our community and researchers in the future. This program also has a critical outreach outcome: knowledge, impact, and recognition for its participatory scientists. Through this project, EwA and its strong community empower each other to advocate for urban forests.
