Hello everyone!

Here’s the September 3rd edition of EwA’s weekly highlights.

📸 A great thing about birdwatching is that there are always new seasonal events to observe. Late summer offers the opportunity to watch some subadult birds learning to make it on their own, and Heather caught this beautiful photo of a subadult great blue heron (Ardea herodias) at Horn Pond on Sunday.

In other heron-related news, Yvonne spotted this black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) in Daan District, Taiwan. I was pretty surprised to learn that the black-crowned night heron’s range is so broad–they can be found in parts of every continent except Australia and Antarctica!

Last, we’ve got this picture of the beautiful red-banded leafhopper (Graphocephala coccinea) taken by Kate. This insect is a classic example of how much it pays to stop and look a little closer, wherever you are. Kate took this observation in the densely developed area near Magoun and Ball squares in Medford. It may be easy to miss due to its tiny size, but it sure is beautiful!

That’s all for this week—hope you have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

📅 EwA Upcoming Public Events

Ewa Field Events » Check the EwA Summer Program [ Event details and registration » ] Don’t miss some great opportunities to follow the rhythm of the season in our local habitats and in the local wildlife! Space is limited for all our field events. Wildlife ethics is important to us and we seek to avoid putting the pressure on natural habitats which large gatherings unavoidably do. We are asking our audience to register-and-commit (or cancel when you know you can’t come) to avoid no-shows.

EwA Fieldwork (and Resources)

Peak schedule: Our monitoring programs are in full swing, and are occurring every week this time of year. Check EwA’s Volunteer Program Calendar 📅  to know when things happen. And if a session is of interest to you, don’t hesitate to reach out to get the rendezvous location.
