🄶 Winter Is Here! What's Up This Week?

It's cold out there, after that crazy warm spell, this past week Although, this coming Tuesday will be warm for the season. Anyway, this time of the year is a perfect time to join an EwA team in the field and explore biodiversity and phenology beyond our established sites. It’s an opportunity to witness how plants and animals adapt to the cold, uncover remarkable survival strategies, and gain valuable insights into nature’s cycles and the impacts of climate change. Together, we connect, share natural history stories, and refine our skills while embracing the wonders of the season. Join us in the discovery!

So, bundle up and come explore with us—nature has endless lessons to share, even in the chilliest months! ā„ļø

āœ‰ Please contact the site leader to confirm your attendance for weather updates or any schedule changes.

For event details & scheduling, check our (Google) Event Calendar. We can't wait to see you in the field! šŸæļø

šŸ“· Banner: If you search carefully, you'll find them! Here, you’re looking at a Bucculatrix sp. cocoon nestled on the needle of an Eastern white pine. Some Bucculatrix species are renowned for their ribbed cocoons—tiny, sculptural masterpieces. These cylindrical cocoons are intricately adorned with raised ridges running along their length, creating a striped, textured appearance. Constructed from silk, the larvae often incorporate frass (their waste) into the cocoon as a clever form of protective camouflage. This unique design not only shields the pupae from predators but also enhances the cocoon’s durability. These remarkable ribbed cocoons are often found on leaves or stems of host plants, blending seamlessly with their surroundings! | Ā© Claire O'Neill, some rights reserved (CC-BY-NC)
