Dears,

Warm greetings.

Surprising as it may seem, the largely Christian [only partly Roman Catholic, unlike largely RC in Goa] USA communities are discussing "religious environmentalism" movements as India's Baba Ramdev of Patanjali Yoga fame in Uttarakhand and elsewhere in India, Brahma Kumari's "Vedic Farming", Umendra Dutt of "Nanak Sheti" fame in Punjab, Subhash Palekar of ZBNF Spiritual Farming in Maharashtra and a whole lot of "Baba"s [with Black sheep or otherwise] do likewise.

In Goa, the Archdiocese had declared the just ended Catholic Year 2011-12 theme as "Mon'xea Xristticho Korar, Dev Mogacho Rupkar" meaning "The Covenant of Man and Nature is a symbol/image of God's Love"

Even if one cannot access the magazine in India, the topics can generate a health discussion on what each one of us can do ... even on a non-commercial home-scale gardening venture for home use only. The only Goan to ever become the Indian Army's Chief of Army Staff and later Governor of Punjab, Gen.[Retd] Sunith Francis Rodrigues, PVSM, used to often speak about "Enlightened Self Interest" ...doing good to the society even if the driving force is self interest ...like forming Self-Helf Groups or SHGs to win elections or doing beach cleaning drives to be featured in the local newspapers. Most NGOs and CSOs are also good examples of ESI, unless their leaders embark on ego trips to doom. ESI helps.

There is actually a vocational course in Horticulture as an option instead of any Science [Physics, Chemistry, Biology] or Social Science [History/Geography] or Mathematics at Std. IX and SSC levels in Goa. Talaulikar High School, Sancorda-Sanguem, has that course since 1975, the Don Bosco Farm School, Sulcorna-Quepem, has it from 1996, and St. Bartholomew High School, Chorao-Tiswadi, started it in 2011-12. More schools could adopt this course and help the students to learn something that they will use in life ....and get better results at SSC by relieving Arts inclined students from Maths or Science and Science inclined students from the dreary pages of history.

Warm regards,

Miguel
