Panaji: Weather conditions in Goa over the past few days are very congenial for the increase of mango fruit fly population. The fruit fly lays eggs in the peanut sized fruits, which develop into caterpillars in the fully mature mangoes.

An eco-friendly, cost-effective method is to use pheromone traps. The trap consists of a small container with methyl eugenol lure. When it is hung on the tree it traps the male fruit fly. In the absence of male flies, the female fails to procreate and thus the method controls fly population. Six to eight traps are recommended for one acre of a mango garden.

Fruit fly traps are available with the zonal agriculture offices of all talukas at 75% subsidized rate. tnn

 The only correction is that the young ones of FLIES are known as MAGGOTS and not caterpillars, which are young ones of Lepidopterans [Butterflies and Moths].
