Dear Viresh,

Warm greetings.

It is great to have response from a student on the eve of the World Environment Day [05 June]. Mushtifund is a member school of the Botanical Society of Goa or just BSG.

I am marking a copy of this reply to the Botanical Society of Goa yahoogroups and the Goa Gardeners Googlegroups of organic vegetable and fruit hobby gardeners in Goa and to Earthoholic in Mumbai as it may be of common interest. In the era of "apart"ments, plants can bring us closer.

Almost all fruit plants can be grown in pots. Air-layers of chickoo/sapota, cashew, limes, lemons are best suited for pot cultivation as they are less vigourous in root growth than grafts on seedling root-stocks.

Grafts of mango [epicotyl or 'stone' grafts] were grown in pots for a Ph. D research by Dr. Reju Kurian [now Professor in Horticulture at Kerala Agriculture University] at IIHR-Hessarghatta while I was doing research for my masters degree there. Ms. Almira Rodrigues of Mapusa has obtained mango fruits from grafts grown in shallow bonsai pots/trays.

Pruning once in two to three years should suffice. The time of pruning is important and so it the care before, during and after pruning. Watering must be reduced for about two weeks before root pruning so that the plant is habituated to lower levels of water availability when roots are pruned. Do not prune all roots. Use clean and sharp instruments like secateurs.

Sunlight requirement of potted fruit plants is the same as of the same plant in the ground. Terraces tend to have more reflective heat from cemented surfaces. Use sack cloth, shade net, coir mats and water as may be necessary to provide a suitable ambiance on an open terrace.

Perhaps, it is time to display the potted fruit plant collection of Ms. Almira Rodrigues again at the 21st Festival of Plants & Flowers at SFX School Complex, Siolim, this August ... and may be at the International Centre-Goa, Dona Paula, also. She has more than a hundred plants in a 2 M x 1 metre balcony ...and many bear fruits annually. See is believing.

The Mahamaya Nursery & Agri Farm in Varchavadda, Sal-Bicholim, should soon be ready to host hands-on learning experiences for students and adults alike in organic farming techniques. Nature is a great teacher and "Learnign-by-doing" has been proved to have 85% retention of learning as compared to just 15% of what we are taught or told orally!!

Dear sir

I had attended your workshop at the International center.
I wanted to know whether it would be advisable to plant a mango sapling in a pot which I could keep on my terrace. And then keep pruning it and get some fruits.
Also wanted to know which other Fruit bearing trees could I plant in Pots which could be kept on a terrace where the plant would get sufficient amount of sunlight.

Thanking you

Festival of Plants & Flowers 2011, Goa

The 3-day 20th annual Festival of Plants and Flowers at SFX School, Siolim, Goa, India, was inaugurated by Mr Maendra Joslyn Alvares of "BIG Foot", on 13 August.
The theme this year is " Medicine from medicinal plants in Goa". Students from different schools presented projects on the medicinal uses of Goan plants along with a potted specimen of the plant. There were also on display of ornamental plants.
The Food & Drug Administration, Legal Metrology [Weights & Measures] of Goa and the PWD also participated besides several prominent Goa nurseries, selling ornamental plants , organic garden inputs including seeds, manures and insect repellents, panchagavya, EM, etc and books.
Begun by the SFX School's PTA and a few public spirited neighbours led by the indomitable cartoonist, Alexyz Fernandes, and guided by experienced botanist Miguel Braganza, this green event is now managed by the Eco Club with the whole hearted support of the Fransalians [MSFS] and their eco-Advisors Seby Diogo Pinto [who leads from the 'Forefront'] and Robert D' Mello. The Botanical Society of Goa, the Directorate of Agriculture's Zonal Agriculture Office-Mapusa and Vikas Nursery have always been a part of this festival since 1992.
The veteran stalls of the Festival - Apurbai's Philu and Francis Borges from Assagao, Garden Glory's Alex and Lynette, Vikas Nursery from Dhargalim, Ashok Dande, GOACAN, Other India Bookstore, and subsequent additions like Green Essentials - added their own charm and importance.

In the era of living in high-rise "apart"ments, plants can bring us closer.

Perhaps, gootee layers of mango [the method that I demonstrated at ICG, Dona Paula on 01 June] need to be re-started for this purpose. The irrepressible Fr. Inacio Almeida, sfx, the "father" of organic farming in Goa, has done that with cashew at the Zagoti Nature Farm, Bhironda-Sattari, Goa.
