Happy Holidays to Everyone!

We just posted a minor update to v1.3 to fix some bugs we discovered.
Please give it a quick look and let us know if we missed anything.

You can download the update here: http://www.earthnc.com/beta/EarthNCBeta.zip
Installation instructions here: http://earthnc.com/beta/installation_instructions.txt

To recap the changes:
- Marine Charts should load properly now on older iOS 3.0 devices
- Restored the 'export all' button in the Saved menus (top right
corner)
- Changed the labeling in the Saved Places menu to Saved Waypoints for
consistency

We'll have new data layers and features coming out soon, as well as
new products for Brazil and the Bahamas.

Regards,
Virgil

I have what I think would be a great second app for you guys.

Twice last weekend I was in a place where I did not get cell service (on an airplane and in a dead zone for AT&T (AKA downtown San Francisco!)). Both times I needed a basic highway map. First time was to locate Huntsville Texas and the second was to find a street in San Francisco. I did not even need search. I know the basic vicinity of both. I think it would be so cool if I could get a basic AAA road map set to take with me on my iPhone. I think it might be a lot of data but I would be happy if I could carry a handful of States and Cities with me. I see apps that are city specific. They are quite expensive.

Rob,

I believe the EarthNC app will do this pretty well actually.

You can switch to OpenStreetMap, and then cache maps of cities in the same way you cache the NOAA maps.

Is that what you are looking for?

Andrew, I had no idea. This is what I am looking for. Do they cache automatically? How do I know what resolution I am caching? Do I just zoom in and out on a bunch of locations?

Rob,

I wonder how many other folks out there don't know there way around the map/chart caching. The basic steps are:

1) Find the area you want on the map, and press the download button on the map.

2) Set the slider to the MAX zoom level you want - so if you select 18 on the roadmaps, you will get the deepest possible resolution (all levels, 1-18).

3) Trace a box with your finger to outline the exact area you want.

4) Press save.

I think you will find zoom level 15 or 16 is sufficient for the MAX zoom level for road maps.

Each zoom level triples the download size (18 is 3 times as large as 17, and 17 is 3x as large as 16, and so forth).

FYI, you can turn on Airplane Mode to verify how the map will look when offline.

GPS is dead in Airplane Mode though.
