I've uploaded the scanned letter from Agnes Wood (nee Earsman), who makes some interesting claims about the origins of the Earsmans...

It is an interesting letter Barry - how reliable do you think her
claims might be? Have you been able to get to see the family bible?

And thanks for the gravestone pic - nice to see it.

I have no idea how reliable her claims are. I'd love to see this legendary family bible, but haven't a clue where it might be now. It would take some detective work.

Barry, I was also keen to get my hands on this bible. Way back then,
when we got the letter fron Aunty Agnes, the family agreed that Uncle
Archie had it. Your Dad's father (James Howden Rae ) contacted his
brother in the South Island, but apparently no-one knew were it had
gone. Perhaps now, with this website, it might come to light!
