Further to the messages in the original discussion [see 'From
Lockerbie to Liverpool' discussion], I have been searching to try to
find out exactly where the 'Howitson & Earsman' business was in
Liverpool. After much diggging around in archives, I have actually
found a PHOTO of the business - you can see it here:

http://www.20thcenturyimages.co.uk/trolleyed/13/46/948/index.htm

The shop is just to the left of the large 'Jacob's Tailoring' shop on
the corner - you cannot really make it out, but I can assure you from
seeing a copy of the original that the writing on the shop front says

"3&4
Howitson & Earsman
Improved
Shirt
Makers"

I am amazed to find a photo of the actual shop!

Having taken a closer look, I can now also tell you that the writing
on the four windows of the shop says, from left:

Scarves
& Braces

Hosiery
& Gloves

Shirts and
Collars

Cardigans
Umbrellas

Mike, that is incredible sleuthing work! After seeing the image, I must admit I'm left scratching my head. The resolution is too low to read even the name of the shop, let alone words like "umbrellas" and "cardigans"!

I must conclude one of the following:
1. You have access to incredible image-enhancement software right out of Blade Runner
2. You have a great imagination
3. You bought the hi-res version of this image
4. You know what's written on the window from some other source

Which is it?

Cheers
Barry

Numbers 1 and 3 Barry ...

I did buy a high res copy of the photo [it's copyright, so I'm
currently trying to see if the owner of the copyright will let me pass
on a cropped version of just the H&E shop front] ...

And I do have access to some amazingly sophisticated image-enhancement
software ...
