Hi again -- here's some interesting info from the IGI files on
familysearch.com. Has anybody followed up on these before:

James HARSEMAN (born about 1734) of Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland married
Jean Wilson

(Salt Lake City temple endownents for the dead, 1893-1970: Heir
indexes, 1924-1956: baptisms for the dead, 1941-1970, 1893-1970 Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. Salt Lake Temple) this also included a
lot of the names from below.
-----------------------------
Jame HEARSMAN was married 19 Feb 1758 Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland (no
spouse given) COULD THIS BE OUR JAMES?

Mary HARSEMAN, christened 23 Fed 1758 Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland,
daughter of James HARSEMAN and Jean Wilson

John HARSEMAN, christened 17 Feb 1760 Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland, son
of James HARSEMAN and Jean Wilson

Agnes HARSMAN, christened 02 Aug 1765 Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland,
daughter of James HARSMAN and Jean Wilson

Adam HARSMAN married Janet Henderson 10 Jan 1772 Moffat, Dumfries,
Scotland

May HARSEMAN married John Moffat 03 Nov 1776 Moffat, Dumfries,
Scotland

(Parish registers for Moffat, 1709-1854, Parish registers for
Lochmaben, 1751-1855)
-----------------------------------------

Alexander HEARSMAN married Sarah Stiven (daughter of David Stiven) 02
Jul 1774 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

(Parish records for St. Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh 1573-1855
-----------------------------------------

Jane HEARSEMAN, christened 25 Mar 1809 Crawfordjohn, Lanark Scotland,
daughter of Adam HEARSEMAN and Agnes Young

Walter HEARSMAN married Agnes Denholm 20 Dec 1807 in Crawfordjohn,
Lanark, Scotland

(Old Parochial registers for Crawfordjohn 1693-1854
----------------------------------

Adam HARSMAN married Marrion Young 06 Aug 1671 Skirling, Peebles,
Scotland

(Parish registers for Peebles, 1622-1854, Parish registers for
Skirling 1665-1854)

the sources in parens are specific microfilms

I have been researching my elusive German ancestors at the local LDS
Family Research Center, less than 10 minutes from my house. I'll see
if I can get the microfilms with the digitized parish registers --
Takes a week or two if they don't have to be backordered -- surely
more decipherable than trying to translate Gothic German Script and
Latin from the German church books? Anybody have some specific
lookups from the areas mentioned above?? I know there are lots of
Earsmans and Earsemans in the Moffat register. That's the one I'll
order first.

If this can be verified, it might get us all puzzling again as to the
origins of the name -- maybe we did ride horses! maybe we were
herdsmen! (I hope we didn't drive hearses) There are lots of Horsman
and Horseman entries in closeby areas. And it might change the
branching -- the Moffat line might go farther up than we thought.

This is more challenging than solving crosswords and sudoku puzzles--
I just wish there was an answer key in the back of the book!

The latest download in the File section is really helpful -- and, as
usual, answers some questions and raises others. MANY Thanks

Well done, Barbara!  That certainly sounds like our James and Jean! Hearsman eh?  As you say, that's a whole new set of possibilities re names to research.  It is quite wonderful to discover this new source of records.

Dear Barbara,

Welcome to the Earsman Group.

Also greetings to the rest of the Family out there.

Some would be forgiven for thinking that Tamsania and yours truely had slipped off the map, but the Holland Family has been in transit after having a very busy tail end of 2007 , tidying up and installing a manager for our business in Tasmania, selling our house, moving to the Mainland of Australia again and having a holiday in Cairns and then settling into our new home. There's still about 300 boxes to unpack so not truely settled yet.

With the activity shown in the last few days, I couldn't help myself but to go out to the garage and pull out BOX 40, this is my family history box no. 1 and has my Earsman files.

So Barbara, it looks like the Walter who married Agnes Denholm are 1M and 2M respectively and form the begginning of our Moffat branch (hence the M),Adam who married Agnes are 1A and 2A forming the start of the Abington branch. But what a challenge now to find out if we can connect to the family you have found back in the 1600's

I have also been in contact, last year, with a nephew of Roger Earsman, who put together the fairly comprehensive charts that were put together in the 1960,s and have just dropped him a line as he was keen to help us get things rolling again with the family tree.

So after an absence from the internet for about four months during our move, hopefully I can post some more of the information from Roger Earsman, after I go back into the site and find out what I've already posted.

Keep in touch and we'll all love to see what you come up with

Kind regards Vicky Holland, now living in the Canberra region.

Following on from Barbara's fascinating post, I looked up the Harsman-
Young marriage on Scotland's People.

I have uploaded a cleaned up version of the parish register for
August 1671 to the downloads section - and to my eye at least, this
would seem to be the first written evidence we have come across yet of
the Earsman name, even though it appears in the 'official'
transcription of the records as Harsman ...
