Kathy, et. al.:

Gee, finding a work space for bike stuff would be great… and these would be in nice neighborhoods for it – North Park! Or City Heights!

But, I bet a building owner would likely be more willing to rent/donate use of a building or space within one to a legal entity; an individual or a “corporation” or business.

Does the Bike Kitchen or Earn-A-Bike have a bank account, business license or other means to establish a responsible party… or an individual who would/could take responsibility? If not, maybe some other organization would take on the responsibility, such as the S.D.Co. Bicycle Coalition? The Coalition’s non-profit status as a 501( c )3 could help.

Is there still interest among the Earn-a-Bike folks?

Here is the only info I have on the Circle Sound Studio, which is the owner’s office or home address.  Why doesn’t the Bike Kitchen send this person a letter requesting the use of the building?

Where is this building exactly? I looked it up on the map, but I can’t picture it in my head right now. The one that I really like on El Cajon is an old factory building that used to manufacture sewing supplies. (I think)  Are we talking about the same building

I’ll do the research on where I need to go to find the owner of that building and do that when I’m downtown on Tuesday. Hopefully I’ll find something and you all can get some really cool projects started….talk soon, Michelle

Actually, I’ve never had to locate this type of information before, but I did hear about this process.  I don’t need it immediately, so if you could take care of it next Tuesday, that would be wonderful.  Have you seen this building?  It is vacant, but has so much potential.  It would be a perfect location to host a phantom gallery, but I would also like to speak to the owner and find out what his plans are.  Maybe we could convince LISC to purchase the property and turn it into an arts center!

Hey Michelle,

Did you say that you are able find the contact info of building owners in City Heights?  If so, can you take a close look at one located at 3467 El Cajon Boulevard?

Thank you.

I think workspace sounds great. Let us know what needs to be done and we’ll do what we can.

Earn a Bike does have a bank account, but not sure if there is any other license or other stuff.

The Bike Kitchen people are interested in working out a cooperative venture with Earn-a-bike folks… to write up something like a business plan to present to some building owner/managers in the Mid City area to find a suitable place for collecting, storing, sorting, working/wrenching, teaching kids and/or adults, getting kids on bikes, and maybe selling bikes and/or parts.

Who from Earn-a-bike will help make this happen? … besides me…

I haven’t heard from ANY earn-a-bike proponents/supporters. Is this effort defunct/of no more or little interest among this group?

Where are we with this project/desire?

As I recall here’s what’s needed (what do we already have? Is there an inventory?):

Business Plan – is this written up somewhere (maybe I have something buried?)

Appropriate location – secure, accessible to target “clients”, CHEAP, usable for working on bikes and for teaching groups

Tools and Equipment – repair stands, bike tools, storage bins, work benches

Supplies – replacement parts; tubes, tires, chains, brake pads, cables, lubricants, cleaning supplies, etc.

Bicycles – donated, found, police donated, dirt cheap

People - volunteers as “wrenches” and/or “trainer/coaches”, League Cycling Instructors

Staff – manager, “stewards”, board of directors

Permits – ? business license, resale permit

Funding – tax deductible donations to the SDCBC; separate account for Earn-a-Bike (How much do we have now?)

Jim,

I hope you got the email that I sent last week in response to your inquiry. My wife and I are still very intersted in the project and have been taking small steps to try and keep the heartberting. I have used the earn a bike system of the OCBC and had a neighborhood boy graduate withs new bike, helmet and lock.

Problem has been time. I have made a few grant requests and have begun what could be the begining of a business plan. I would love to get people back on track (including me) and jumpstart the project again.

As soon as I get home (tuesday) I will post the letters that I have and try hard to gain some traction.

Anyone else interested?
David

Thanks.

There is a Bike Kitchen group in City Heights. They are interested in working with an Earn-a-bike program.

You can find them at the City Heights Farmers Market on Saturdays; the Wightman St. block between Fairmont and 43rd.

On the second Saturday of each month a few of us, including the Bike Kitchen folks, are running short community bike rides – less than five miles. The one tomorrow, June 13 include icecream!
