This is the email I received from Jenny after we met. I sent one back
letting her know that I've sent an email to you all to see what you think,
and I suggested that maybe a good place to start would be to have the bike
cart workshop as an introductory event just to have everyone get to know
everyone else. Let me know what you think.

Hi Kathy,

I wanted to thank you again for coming by today. The box of donations is
really awesome. Its just full of so many essential parts.

When I sent out an e-mail and called folks about you coming by there was
a lot of positive feedback and I will soon be touching base with everyone
to let them know about the exciting ideas we were discussing.

The experience that the coalition has in its members is a very valuable
community resource and together I feel confidant that we can support the
bike kitchen toward a thriving direction where its demand and resources
will far surpass the current space.

So to recap on prospective future collaboration:

- build bike carts for mobile bike clinics and/or get donated (would be a
fun workshop the more the merrier plus people have been asking for
this workshop)

- fiscal sponsorship

- bike festival and/or inviting fat tire to sd

We talked about a lot more that had to do with ways the coalition may help
in directing bike donations and volunteer support for workshops in the
future.

Well thanks again!
Jenny

I spent about an hour with "bike kitchen" folks from Davis, San
Francisco and Bakersfield while at the Walk-Bike Conference in Davis.
I also visited a re-bike/kitchen in Dunkirk, NY during my bike
tour... sponsored by a church. Interesting stuff.

Seems like the SD folks have a major resource - volunteers, and an
operation that is actually functioning. That seems like a good place
to focus our efforts for now, but also to work on getting a larger,
indoor, semi-permanent space... cheap.

I think we should help/support but perhaps first get involved as
equal, though late-comer, volunteers.

It seems clear to me that more formality is desirable (tax status,
business license, paid manager(s), etc.) to the extent that money,
sales and relatively expensive tools/bikes/equipment get involved.

I could see the Coalition providing bank account/check writing
services for their operation when if they want it and we have some
assurances about what and how funds are collected/spent.

I'm at a loss. What is a "Bike Cart Workshop"?

Hi Tom,
We're thinking of building a bunch of bike trailers to haul stuff around
with/for the bike kitchen. Apparently Jenny has some plans that she is
thinking of using to put them together. I'm not sure exactly what she has in
mind, but I'm assuming they're just some variation on a bike trailer.
Could be fun!
How about a weekend in October? We've got Tour de Poway on the 7th and MS
150 on the 13th - How about 21, 27, or 28?

Saturday is better for me because I have my regular Sunday morning
group ride with my son's crowd. Of course Satuday would have to work
around any BikeEd Road I plans we might have for October. Any late
breaking news on that front?

Jim, I like the plans you sent - very detailed. What do you all think of
these that Jenny found?
Looks like the 21st will be the day for our little get-together. I think we
should start collecting parts.

Hey Kathy,
Here are two links to trailers friends have made that have proven the
course. Which one do you think would be best for transporting bike parts
and what not for workshops?

In regards to a time October would be good. Right now the 21st looks the
best. Well, sorry for the delay I was trying to re-find the tutorials and
had to get a hold of some folks in the collective for the details. Anyway,
I look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Jenny

I'm available in the afternoon on Sunday, October 21st after my
regular Sunday morning ride. We usually finish by 11:00. I could
bring some of my tools and am willing to purchase some of the
supplies we can't get from donations. I don't have any extra wheels.

I have no experience building with bamboo... :-( Can't really opine
with any authority about which of those plans would be best.

I have two trailers; one similar to a Bob - must be used with a
special-longer quick release skewer, and one that was a kid trailer -
would need a more solid platform to support heavier/tool items. I'd
consider making these available as loaners.

It seems to me that looking for, advertising for used/neglected or
even loaner bike trailers would be easier and cheaper than building
new ones... new ones that may not be as durable as metal,
professionally fabricated ones.... and there's the cache of recycling
an otherwise neglected trailer from some ones backyard/garage.
