These are three publications from the California Department of Education (CDE) that are used in an Infant and Toddler Development course. Students can save PDF copies of these materials on their computers, print the required readings, and/or read the materials online. For students who wish to have a bound copy, these materials can be ordered from the CDE, (instructions below).

The Foundations document is used throughout the course as we study Infant and Toddler Development.  Selected readings from the other two publications are used for the Social/Emotional and Cognitive Development modules.  (Other outside readings are used for Language and Physical Development modules.)

The Infant and Toddler Development course very often includes observations of children from birth through age three.  As students prepare for these observations they are required to research developmental milestones.  Below are resources provided to students as they prepare for the observation assignments.

Young children develop in certain predictable ways, often referred to as developmental milestones.  Milestones can be identified in the cognitive, language, social, emotional, and physical domains of development.  As you prepare for this observation, please first review the Infant/Toddler Learning & Development Foundations for the domains that you will be observing.  Then select at least one of the following sources to investigate developmental milestones that you might see during your observation:

  • Pathways.org is a not-for-profit organization providing child development information to educate and empower parents and care providers.  The “pathways.org” website has a listing of sensory, motor and communication milestones for age ranges from birth to age three.  They also have a number of videos which illustrate typical and atypical development.  Please access the website at:  https://pathways.org/milestones/  and look for the age range of the child you are observing.  (A link to the available videos is at:  https://pathways.org/watch/ )
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also has milestone charts and some photos/videos to illustrate specific developmental milestones; please access these resources at: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/index.html
  • Another great resource is the Help Me Grow Minnesota website, which has short videos, by age, which review milestones for cognitive, communication and language, social and emotional, and motor development:  http://helpmegrowmn.org/HMG/DevelopMilestone/index.html   This site is nice because the videos are short, (about 5 minutes), and are very specific by age, (1 month, 2 months, etc.)

Note:  The above sites are useful because they include both written information and videos, to appeal to students with varied learning styles.  Also, some students in this course have had little prior interaction with infants and toddlers, so it is helpful for these students to review videos prior to observing.  We trust that the above sites will continue to be resources for our students in their work with young children.

SCRIPT NC has given permission for their resources to be used for non commercial purposes. But most of their content is linked to a outside resources that are copyrighted (that could be used for a ZTC, but not for OER). A group of faculty across the California Community Colleges received funding from the ASCCC OERI  to create a collection of content to replace textbooks for a variety of Infant and Toddler classes (mix and match as needed for your course content). You can find it here: https://socialsci.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Early_Childhood_Education/Infant_and_Toddler_Care_and_Development_(Taintor_and_LaMarr)
