Hi Dave,

As you may know there are differences between Persian and Arabic writing styles. we have many Persian unique fonts that are designed specially for Persian users and not Arabs.

Unfortunately there are not a Persian font in Google Fonts. so I am eager to help you out in case you are interested in adding any Persian fonts.

You can count on me, so please inform me of your decision to start the first project. :)

Thank you,
Ismael Zabihi

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your reply,

I just took a look at Jomhuriah Font. It feels Persian and Arabic though; It is not bad-made so-so, but it is really not a functional and practical font for Persian users.

When you ask Persians, they definitely say IT IS A SPECIAL CALLIGRAPHIC FONT which would rarely be used as a standard or popular font.

Actually I myself do not like it at all specially in graphical and practical aspects, although I really do appreciate the creator's efforts and his kind consideration for Persian Fonts.

I found only 3 Arabic fonts in Google Fonts which are not efficient at all!!

Persians and Arabs have many many common or independent fonts that are practical, beautiful and popular. For Arabs, I am not sure but for us, Iranians, I am pretty sure that these 3 fonts plus the Jomhuriah are useless and ignorable.

I have personally edited some popular fonts for web and print, like Yekan, Nazanin and Mitra which are really popular in here but I was thinking of creating brand new open source fonts specially for Google Fonts to be used Freely by all Persians around the world.

What do you recommend? from where we can start?

Best of all,
Ismael

No, that's not right! He did in the 1970s :) 1975 according to http://www.linotype.com/de/427/timholloway.html

I couldn't find an authoritative source for Yekan;

It seems it is a hamoonsoft font..?

While searching I found http://tug.org/pipermail/luatex/2010-May/001529.html which appears to be a zero-price Persio-Arabic font distributed by the state. Do you know anyone to contact about making it libre? :)

Dear Dave,

I think there is a misunderstanding here. :)

I said I had EDITED (but not created) the fonts !!!!!!!!

I "edited" them for personal use and I did not distribute them for commercial purpose. In face the beautiful YEKAN was created by Mr. Masood Sepehr and other fonts also have their own licenses which must not be violated.

Thank you,
Ismael

Yes, I understand - I'm sorry if I appear to have implied that you were claiming to be the designer and I was refuting that claim. What I intended to say was that, while I am personally happy that you exercised your freedom to modify these fonts to fit your needs, I can not accept your modified versions for inclusion in the Google Fonts catalog; nor could I accept wholly new digital fonts of these designs.

Right :)

Is Mr. Masood Sepehr still in business?

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your reply,

I just wanted to know if you welcome any brand new fonts designed by me. I understand the rights of other font owners.

About Masood Sepehr you can follow    http://masoodsepehr.com/farsi-fonts.html

if you need any help anytime, feel free to contact me. :)

I get back to my designing and contact you in near future.

Have a very nice time,
Ismael

Dear Dave,

Could you please help me to find out
how a font creator can license his/her own font ?

Are there any references or entities to refer to?  or simply we put our name or organization`s at the license section of the font-creation-software !

it is a big question in my mind. :)

Thank you.

Nazanin was designed by "Mr Haghighi" for Linotype in 1978.

Mitra was designed by Tim Holloway for Linotype in 2005.

I couldn't find an authoritative source for Yekan; I did find http://openfontlibrary.org/en/font/xm-yekan which was uploaded to openfontlibrary.org 1.5 years ago, but under the GPL; the www.Irmug.org site the author provided is no longer running, and (as per https://github.com/google/fonts/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md) I'd need to contact the copyright holders to seek permission to make a new release under the OFL.

If you can list existing fonts given away for free by their copyright holders, and contact them and persuade them to make the fonts into libre font projects (as per https://github.com/google/fonts/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md) then I can include them in the Google Fonts collection.

If you can make new originaly typeface designs from scratch, I'll be happy to review your portfolio of existing work :)
