Mountain Lion Activity - Erie Air Park
Erie Animal Control was notified of a likely mountain lion encounter just after midnight on October 3, when a small dog was believed to have been taken from a backyard near the Erie Air Park.
While sightings like this can feel alarming, it’s important to remember that mountain lions are native to Colorado and do inhabit areas around Erie, especially near open space and wildlife corridors. Most are elusive and avoid humans — but they may be drawn closer to homes by easily accessible food sources, including unattended pets.
Here’s how you can help keep pets and property safe:
Bring pets indoors overnight and supervise them when outside, especially at dawn or dusk.
Remove attractants such as pet food, bird seed, or water dishes from yards.
Install motion-activated lights or cameras to deter wildlife activity.
Secure backyard fencing and avoid leaving small animals unattended.
If you see a mountain lion, do not approach it. Instead, call Erie Police Dispatch at 303-441-4444 to report the sighting, or contact Colorado Parks & Wildlife for additional guidance.
Our team and wildlife partners are monitoring the situation. Your vigilance and quick reporting help us keep both our community and native wildlife safe.
