Subject: Significant negative impact project being proposed
To: Laurren <lau...@gmail.com>, eriea...@eahoa.org <eriea...@eahoa.org>

The town council has a meeting last night where they discussed options to connect the North portion of county line road to hwy 7 via alternate routes THROUGH the airpark!  One up the east west runway, one by connection the north dead end of Cessna so people would come through either commander or Cessna, and two on the west side of the airlort

We need to mobilize the troops to keep the traffic from talking over or peaceful neighborhood.

Here is the link to the slides shown:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I am very strongly against this. As someone who lives right off of Bonanza, it is already a racetrack - I can’t imagine if it went through!

This extension was proposed and defeated (I thought with Prejudice)  in June 2010.

  • The extension of Bonanza Drive was proposed and residents of the Airpark opposed it, citing previous promises that the road would not be extended north. A letter from Vista Ridge developers also pledged to bypass Bonanza Drive.
  • Resident opposition: A resident stated that the town had previously promised not to allow Bonanza Drive to extend to the north.
  • The lawsuit: This is connected to a 2009 lawsuit brought by residents against the town after the town closed one of the airport's runways. The residents claimed the closure violated an agreement to have two runways.
  • The settlement: The town settled the lawsuit in 2011 by agreeing to "take all reasonable action to reserve the previous Runway 9-27 area at the Erie Airport for future runway planning". This was the first step toward bringing the runway back to life, and the residents agreed to drop the suit in exchange for the town's commitment to future runway planning.
It was a long and mind bending engagement with the town council for several years.

I tried to find the transcripts of the final decision, but the online option doesn’t go back that far.

The Boulder Camera and the Denver news stations covered this at the time.

It seems all the board members agreed that  no road should run through the Air Park.  But I've never been able to trust the Town when it comes to the Air Park. I am totally against sending any more traffic down Bonanza Drive!

We had and election about extenting Bonaza many years ago and it was defeated.
Andrew Moore has always been the person who wants to change the Air Park. Don't know why, but I had several conversations with him at the time.

some of these appear to cross the runways? That can't be a serious proposal, can it?

I wrote an email with my concerns to the following addresses and here is one response I received so far. Perhaps if we all send our concerns, we will be heard.

Hi Julie,

Thank you for reaching out to the Town Council. I wanted to follow-up just to mention that there was no support from Town Council to look further into options that would connect into and bring traffic through Erie Air Park. As a Vista Pointe resident, I would like to look further into options 4 and 5 to both reconnect County Line Road to CO-7 and possibly allow a better connection to the businesses at the southern end of the airport. I have no desire to see more traffic directed through existing neighborhoods, which is why those two options are appealing to investigate further.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions or if you have other ideas regarding this idea.

Thank you,

I noticed that too, and sending people down Piper to Bonanza will make it miserable, especially getting out on Bonanza heading South - it’s already a pain in that intersection

Well, here we go again. This seems to come up every 10-15 years or so. The last proposal, as I recall, as to extend Bonanza Drive through to Vista Parkway. That was shot down for several reasons, one being the road would have to be widened and would then be too close to the houses at the end of Bonanza and the HOUSES would have to be removed. Great choice. That died a welcomed death.

Looking at the proposed options in the map above, it is obvious the people planning these routes have NO IDEA what an airport even is.

Let me comment on the ones that made me laugh out loud first:

PA 2 and PA3 that go..........let me take a breath, here.....UNDER THE RUNWAY!!!! What a GREAT idea! For one thing, the road would not go under the runway but the runway would have to go OVER THE ROAD, meaning putting bridges............BRIDGES........on the runway and digging a HUGE approach to the 'underpass' to get it under the bridge. 1) can you imagine what that would cost?? 2) I'm pretty sure the FAA might have a thing or two to say about that and would likely NEVER get approval. Not to mention PA 2 happens to go through John's house (290 Skylane). PA 3 actually comes down 9-27 not Piper. I'm surprised they didn't propose a runway over pass over the road.........!!!

PA 1 would mean enlarging all the connecting streets including Cessna and Commander. There is likely NOT enough room to expand without getting, again, too close to the houses there.

PA 5,6,7,9 and 10 go THROUGH OR ACROSS ACTIVE TAXIWAYS!!! Brilliant. Not disruptive at all.

PA 8 is the old County Line Road that is now closed to traffic. Why not open it back up to traffic. That seems like it would be the least disruptive.

PA 0 is probably the best option. And it keeps traffic out of the Airpark.

I wish I had been in on that planning meeting. I likely would have been thrown out from my disruptive LAUGHING!

Will we have the opportunity to comment on this? It would be so disruptive it might even have to be a local ballot issue.

Some thoughts............

Michael

Besides having an impact on the airpark residents on the east side of the airport there are 10 airpark residences on the west side that would be impacted by options PA5, PA6, PA7 and PA9 which would increase traffic on Airport Drive and at the intersection of Airport Drive and HW7.  The new business developments on the west side are already increasing traffic, we don't need more.

Just wanted to update everyone and let you know I received responses from multiple council members. All said that going through the neighborhood was a non-starter. And here is some additional information directly from the mayor to me that I feel is important to share.

*****************************
From Mayor:

One more piece of information I went back to the study session video where council directed staff to study a N/S option. I made the motion, which included the word "only" regarding studying options, to be constrained to one: County Line to Airport Drive. (Town Council on 2025-06-17 6:00 PM - Special Meeting, minute 52).

Because that direction was not taken, we now have many in our community unnecessarily concerned that traffic will be routed through the Air Park on residential streets. I feel council did a great job saying any route in the Air Park is a no-go.

I'll be following up with our town manager to determine the best way to communicate to our community that alternatives 4 and 5 are the only items that should have been studied and brought back to council.

My apologies for the confusion and anxiety this may have caused.
