When you first start up The Outlast Trials, you can customize your character's appearance. There are even more customization options within the game once you get past the tutorial. The Outlast Trials is different from its predecessors. The game is not telling the story of someone else but rather the story of your character and many others like you.
Red Barrel wanted to make players feel involved. You can purchase and unlock different things to make your character and their living quarters unique to you. Below is a detailed guide on how to customize both your character and your cell to their fullest.
Update on June 8, 2023 by Sharnelle Earle: There are tons of new things that you can unlock as you progress through the game and eventually become Reborn. Some customization opens are locked and only accessible through completing a specific Trial. Information in this article is subject to change as The Outlast Trials is currently in Early Access of Season 1. We hope to see even more customization options as the game grows.
You can change your appearance in The Outlast Trials again by heading to your cell block. After the tutorial, you will be placed in a lobby full of other players. This prison block is the main lobby you will get thrown into with other random players. There is a dedicated cell for each person.
There is a sink in your cell. Interact with the mirror above it to access character customization. In this menu, you can change your race, hair, and voice all over again.
New and unlocked character customization options will cost regular currency. These will be the yellow coins you see next to your name at the top right of the screen. You can earn money by completing trials and leveling up.
You might have noticed these really cool outfits in the Appearance customization menu that are locked. These cannot be accessed until you become Reborn. Becoming Reborn takes a lot of hard work. You have to basically beat the game completely in order to do so.
This means completing every challenge within every Program, including Program X. Only after reaching the final mission and becoming a new character will you be able to unlock these outfits and display them for everyone.
You have probably noticed by now that other people's cell rooms look way cooler than yours. To change that, head to your cell and interact with your bed to begin customizing the interior of your cell.
Everything in the interior customization menu will cost money. Just as with character customization; you will be able to unlock new items, such as new wallpapers and posters, as you level up and play through the game.
The items in your cell customization menu that are readily available and do not need unlocking will cost 100 coins each. Completing a trial or leveling up will yield plenty of money for customizations.
It is worth noting that upon completing an entire Program, you will get special rewards relating to that Program. For instance, by completing every single challenge and trial within Program 1 Police Station, you will get a Police Station statue for decoration and a Leland Coyle poster.
There is no added benefit to customizing your character or cell other than to create individualism and to stand out in a crowd. The regular currency is only used for customizing, so you can spend it however you desire.

"Kandie [Bloch-Jones] performed like the champion today," exclaimed Head Coach Ron Garner. "I am extremely proud of her personal fortitude and for the effort that she gave in the high jump. Winning this event at [Rod] McCravy isn't an easy task to start with several top national level competitors. But, tonight's significance was being able to actually jump. Kandie developed a pretty severe case of the flu the past several days and hasn't been able to consume many calories. She just rested and hydrated. Today showed her will to compete, beating a two-time Big Ten high jump champion, another six-foot jumper, and attempt to jump at a new personal record, school record and a meet record."
Bloch-Jones cleared five bars in the high jump competition to win the high jump competition; outlasting defending Big Ten champion Janae Moffitt (Purdue). The Illini senior missed just once on her way to clearing her first three heights.
Down to just three high jumpers at 5'11.25" (1.81m), all three competitors missed on their first attempt. After both Moffitt and Erika Voyzey (Miami) missed on their second attempt, Bloch-Jones cleared the bar on her second attempt. Bloch-Jones' clinched the event victory when Moffitt and Voyzey both missed on their third attempts.
I'm very pleased with the mindset that she's demonstrating," said Garner. "She's also jumped at our school record of 1.86m or better three times this season. Her mental and physical effort has been exceptional throughout."
Elsewhere in field events, long jumper Janile Rogers marked her best jump of the season to place fifth overall. The Illini junior leaped 18'8.75" (5.71m) on her fourth attempt of the afternoon, improving upon her previous jump of 18'4.5" (5.60m).
"Her effort looked better than her measured marks," said Garner of the Illini long jumper. "It was a solid performance, as she finished fifth out of 23 jumpers, and 10 of them had jumped over 20 feet coming in to the meet. It was a new runway and all of the jumpers struggled with establishing a consistent approach run and I was impressed with the way she handled herself."
The Fighting Illini continue competition at the Rod McCraavy Memorial meet tomorrow at the Nutter Fieldhouse in Lexington, Kentucky. Illinois' will begin competing at noon central time with 60m hurdles prelims.
