Fromwhat I can gather from other posts, the HP Smart interface only handles 300dpi so I need to download "full featured" scanning software. But when I go to the driver page for Mac OS this doesn't appear, only HP Smart.
I have just discovered (under my own steam) that HP stopped providing full feature drivers for HP printers in 2020. This means no Mac user can scan above 300dpi using an HP Laserjet. Swell. What a utter waste of my time and money. I only bought this to scan archival material because it was advertised as having high dpi.
"As of 2020, Mac full feature drivers with HP Utility are no longer available for most consumer HP printers. As an alternative to HP Utility, use the HP Smart app to set up and manage your printer, or use Mac's built-in print driver for basic printing and scanning tasks." -en/document/ish_7333519-7333646-16
I want to register my disgust that this information is buried in the HP site, and Mac users are not made aware of this at point of purchase. Every driver webpage for the OS operating systems should have this writ large in red letters - I have wasted days trying to solve this issue.
Randomly when I print a document from my Mac Book Air the printer prints loads of pages with just a line of random characters. I have it set up as a Bonjour printer using the driver " HP Cooler Laser MFP 178 179"
I would like to ask for instructions on how to do a factory reset on the HP MFP 178nw. From what I see from other posts, it looks like there are some really "TOP SECRET" instructions, that are only send in PM... And since I've tried the Press Wi-Fi and Cancel button on startup of the printer and nothing happend (normally booted up with all the old settings) I'm really frustrated at this point. In the manuals no instructions whatsoever too...
I have been trying to get my HP Colour Laser MFP 178nw to work with my new Lenovo chromebook with no success, the chromebook see's the printer but will not save it. I have been trying to get a PPD file but my search has been in vain so any help would be great.
Hello, usually the random symbols print out when you have a print driver that does not specifically match the printers model number. You can go to HP.com and download the Full Solutions driver for your HP CLJ 178nw. Here is the link for that,
When you are installing the driver make sure you are using LPD (Line Printer Daemon) protocol instead of IPP (Internet Printing Protocol). You may also try the JetDirect protocol if the LPD one is not working correctly.
I have an issue printing from my MacBook to the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw. It prints only random characters/garbage from any program. I have updated to the latest firmware (April 2022) without any improvement. It is the same behavior from several different programs.
I've just taken delivery of an MFP 178nw, to replace its Samsung C430W older sibling. I wan't to get into the EWS (nee Syncthru), and can get to the basic screen but cannot log in to activate advanced settings. The manuals, when you find them, state the login credentials "out of the box" as ID:admin, Password:. This doesn't work, and neither does any obvious variant of it (capital As, password-as-ID, etc). I have not been able to get in the first time, and so have not changed the password from the factory set value.
In an effort to assist I downloaded this driver archive package and extracted the files. I note that it provides install.sh, install-printer.sh, and install-scanner.sh, (along with associated uninstall scripts as well). Did you run the install.sh script successfully as part of your printer config steps?
HPLIP (version 3.18.5) claims support for HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M178n (and cn) models, but perhaps not for HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg. Hence the ULD driver may be the only option here. If provides both printer and scanner driver components. We just need to clarify whether the install script completed successfully. You might try running the 'install-scanner script (since you mentioned that the printer function was already working).

THANK YOU so much for all your help!!
it was indeed the install of sane-airscan that finally detected and enabled the scanner of my Color Laser MFP 178 nwg printer
so, this thread could be closed - can i do that or should an admin?
again: many many THANKS

My HP Colour Laser MFP 178nw has suddenly started printing everything with a 3" stripe just off centre all the way down, In this block there is sometimes a blurred repetition of the top writing at the bottom. How do I fix this?
HP Color Laser MFP 178nw is another color printer with multifunctional attributes, including printing, copying, and scanning. The HP Color Laser MFP 178nw also has an inbuilt driver that makes it possible to carry out manual duplex printing at the utmost print quality and speed. In addition, it also contains several items in the package, including the following
You may need the hi-speed USB 2.0 port and a fast Ethernet 10/100Base-Tx network port in connecting with this machine. In addition, it has a dual-band wireless 802.11 b/g/n with which it can connect with other wireless devices. The engine supports the number of copies selection, a reduction or enlargement, contrast adjustment, original type, and collation in copying. It can also produce multiple copies, background adjustment, ID card copy, color mode, and auto-fit copy.
This machine HP Color Laser MFP 178nw can produce a maximum of 999 copies from a single original document. At the same time, its zoom level is within the range of 25 and 400%, with gradual 1% Increments. In terms of the copy speed, it is up to 4 copies per minute (CPM) when working on color documents. On the other hand, when copying an original black document in monochrome mode, the rate is up to 19 CPM. In addition, the copy resolution is up to 600 x 600 dots per inch (dpi) through the flatbed.
The acoustic power emission from the printer is up to 6.5 B(A) when printing in monochrome mode. But the color printing mode also produces an acoustic power emission of 6.1 B(A). The recommended humidity range when the printer is in operation is between 20 and 70% with condensation. However, its acceptable temperature range is between 15 and 270C when the machine is actively printing. Download HP Color Laser MFP 178nw driver from Hp website
An ultra-small and light entry-level color all-in-one printer, the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw ($199.99) is designed for light-duty use in a small, micro, or home-based office, or as a personal color laser machine. While it's smaller, lighter, and costs much less than most entry-level color laser AIOs, including the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-L3770CDW, it's also somewhat short on productivity features, such as an automatic document feeder (ADF) for copying and scanning multipage documents. The 178nw also costs more to use than several other competing models, and during testing it struggled a bit to reproduce some of our more complex color test documents. Its low purchase price, though, makes it an attractive option for budget-strapped, low-volume small offices.
The MFP 178nw is essentially a pared-down version of the MFP 179fnw, sans an ADF and a few other features, such as the ability to send and receive faxes. It measures 11.4 by 16 by 14.3 inches (HWD) and weighs about 28.5 pounds. That's about 2 inches narrower and a couple of pounds lighter than its 179fnw sibling, but considerably smaller and lighter than most other entry-level color laser AIOs. The Brother MFC-L3770CDW mentioned above is, for example, a few inches bigger all the way around and weighs about 25 pounds more than the 178nw. And, while it too is a little smaller and lighter than the Brother model, Canon's imageClass MF634Cdw (another PCMag favorite), it's also significantly beefier than the 178nw.
As mentioned, the 179nw comes without an ADF for scanning and copying multipage documents, which for many small offices and other micro-enterprises is often essential. Both the Brother and Canon color laser AIOs mentioned in the previous paragraph come with ADFs, as do many others; although ADF-less AIOs are not uncommon. Each color laser AIO manufacturer offers at least one entry-level model, such as Brother's HL-L3290CDW or Canon's imageClass MF641Cw, which suggests that there are plenty of small offices out there that don't scan or copy a lot of multipage originals.
The good news is that, like most desktop AIOs these days, you can control and configure the 178nw via its on-board web site. From here you can not only set up and execute functions efficiently but also monitor usage and save money by restricting access to such features as printing in color.
