Sorry FormerHeathen, but I have to kind of agree with some of the others. I love Jesus Christ but I see ALOT of wicked, despicable people who enjoy hurting others and seeing others fail prospering daily. People who open tell God to kiss their you know what in so many ways and these people have huge homes, new cars, nice clothing, and their finances are stable.
In other words, even if these verses were only speaking ofpeople old enough to mentally understand sin, they would still beteaching original sin. For on that view, these verses would besaying that all people, as soon as they know good from evil, findthemselves sinners. But if all people, as soon as they are capableof moral decisions, find themselves sinners, this proves that theyare that way by nature.
God is known only by revelation; he stands revealed or remains forever unknown. He cannot be discovered in the laboratory, or by viewing all immensity through giant telescopes, or by cataloging all the laws of nature that do or have existed. A knowledge of his powers and the laws of nature which he has ordained does not reveal his personality and attributes to men in the true gospel sense. Certainly a knowledge of these laws and powers enables man to learn truths which are faith promoting and which help him to understand more about Deity; but saving knowledge of God comes only by revelation from the Holy Ghost as a consequence of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.
However, good news has again come to earth. In these latter days, beginning in 1820, our Heavenly Father, through His Son and His prophets, has rerevealed many divine truths about His nature and personality so that each of us can again come to know Him as the meridian disciples knew him and as we knew Him in our premortal existence.
A brief survey of current events and human history reveals irrefutable evidence testifying to the reality of moral (human against human, e.g. crime) and natural (nature against human, e.g. disease) evil. If evil is certain, then the God of the Old and New Testaments is impossible. A less knowledgeable, less altruistic, less able god might exist, but not the God of Christian worship.
In metaphysics by contrast there is nothing which causes so mucheffort as making our perception of the primary notions clear anddistinct. Admittedly, they are by their nature as evident as, or evenmore evident than, the primary notions which the geometers study; butthey conflict with many preconceived opinions derived from the senseswhich we have got into the habit of holding from our earliest years,and so only those who really concentrate and meditate and withdrawtheir minds from corporeal things, so far as possible, will achieveperfect knowledge of them.
There's no better response, given that I have just told them that in order to proceed with the beautiful sacrament of baptism, which offers a beautiful encounter with God's grace, we need to know that they defiantly renounce the forces of wickedness and evil in the world, and in their own lives.
But it is not so much the absurdity as the evil of hereditary succession which concerns mankind. Did it ensure a race of good and wise men it would have the seal of divine authority, but as it opens a door to the FOOLISH, the WICKED, and the IMPROPER, it hath in it the nature of oppression. Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent. Selected from the rest of mankind, their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed in the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.
Nonetheless, it did happen and was widespread like a cancer or virus. Do people sin? Yes. Do people make mistakes? Yes. This issue of sex abuse goes deeper than that. The sex abuse that occurred is as the Psalmist said, Sin directs the heart of the wicked man; his eyes are closed to the fear of God. For he lives with the delusion: his guilt will not be known and hated.
