Dear All,
Thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery
Heritage Fund and Public Health England, Cartwheel Arts (an art for wellbeing charity in Rochdale) is working on a
two-year exploration of the rich heritage crafts within Rochdale's vibrant
communities with experience of forced migration. It is an absolute privilege for me and our team to work with them on this project.
Work from the Crafting Heritage programme will be exhibited
in The Whitworth's Refugee Week celebrations on Thursday 20th June. Work
from recent workshops, including celebrating Ukrainian Petrykivka and Pysanky,
Arabic Calligraphy and Kurdish, Pakistani, Argentinian, Indian and Moroccan
embroidery will be featured. Cartwheel Arts are running a minibus for
participating parents and their children. If you are around, please pop in and see the art and meet some of our parent artists.
The next phase of the project involves an eight-week training programme for four
artists who have experienced forced migration. They will work with four Rochdale schools to develop a learning resources for KS2, looking at how heritage
crafts of families in our borough can add a rich and locally responsive
element to arts in our schools.
The project will result in:
- A ‘Crafting Heritage Learning Resource’:
A unique and free offer tailored for primary schools in Rochdale, to ensure a
future for heritage crafts which might otherwise be at risk of becoming
endangered.
- Delivery of specialised training for teaching staff
and support and upskill them in using this resource.
- Archived materials created during the project
at Touchstones Rochdale (museum), building a legacy for schools as part of the
project.
I can't wait to see the finished results!
