Hi everyone,

I'm working at an international school that currently uses the CEFR to assess the English level of EALstudents, but it has its limitations in a school context with younger children. The Bell Assessment framework is much more appropriate for this context, but I can't find information on how it correlates to the CEFR. Bell's levels also don't have a correlation to the WIDA exam, which we use as an initial assessment.

Has anyone got (or seen) conversion tables or information on how these systems correlate to each other?

Thanks in advance,
Anna

Thanks Dominic!

Just to make sure I'm reading this correctly, would the Bell Framework (Bands A-E) align with the ESOL assessments for England, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Hi Anna

Attached is an attempt at matching the DfE's A-E codes, CEFR, IELTS, GCSE and the Cambridge ESL Framework. The more things you try to align, the more people will (rightly) argue about, but it is a reasonable starting point.

Best wishes,

Graham

Thanks Graham! It's good to at least have a point to start from :)

Thanks to Endarah for pointing out the glitch in an old version of my assessment slide. The correct version is attached.

Best wishes,

Graham
