Hi

Could anyone guide me towards and early readers which are helpful for teenage EAL who have very low levels of literacy.

So, low English level, but more mature content if possible. Thanks SO MUCH

Kind regards

Hi Tanya
You may find the stories in Racing to English to be helpful - they were actually written by teenagers - here's the link to one of them
Best wishes
Gordon

Hi Tanya

I used to use these Scholastic ELT readers a lot. They are not usually "classics" simplified, but often they are familiar stories from TV or film, so teenagers relate to them. "Mr Bean's holiday" was a great favourite with my secondary pupils of all ages! It looks like the list of titles has changed in the last 2 years, because I don't see one about Pele any more, and that was also a favourite with football-mad pupils! But "Night at the museum" was another good level 1 reader, and it appears to be available still.

The books come with glossaries and questions of various kinds, and you can download free resource sheets.

Hope that helps.

Ann

Hi
Our KS2 pupils get on really well with Pearson Rapid Readers. I’d recommend them for high interest- low challenge. Might be worth trying with teens.

The Pearson Rapid Plus Readers series were designed specifically for this older age group. https://www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/secondary/subjects/english-and-media/rapid-plus-1
There is also a teacher Guide which makes reference to specific strategies to support EAL readers in guided reading sessions.  Simon Murison Bowie and myself co wrote this material on behalf of NALDIC several years ago. I would recommend these books for teens. They also have a mix of fiction and related non-fiction texts in the same book; essential for older pupils to develop their skills reading indifferent genres in all curriculum subjects.

The NATE multicultural/diversity working group (of which I am a member) has a meeting this evening (open to all) on developing accessible and engaging literature resources for mainstream classrooms that include pupils with different levels of literacy development. We have always worked on balancing access and engagement. In the past we produced print based anthologies and we are planning an online one. English Media Centre have also produced a stimulating diverse short story anthology Iridescent Adolescent and have free activities to scaffold collaborative groupwork.
Best wishes,

Hi Tanya,

I think CLASS, the Bury EMA team, have produced some of these.  You might be able to get hold of them through their website or through NASSEA.

All the best
