Hi there everyone

For those of you requiring information about conducting oral examinations for first language GCSES, here is guidance from AQA. I hope this is helpful.

For the attention of exams officers and teachers

Dear colleague

As you prepare to submit your students’ grades this summer, we’d like to clarify the arrangements for the separate endorsement element for your subject.

For spoken language in GCSE MFL and GCSE English Language, and for A-level Practical Science, the deadline for submitting a grade/level for the endorsements will be the same date as submitting students’ overall grades – 18 June 2021. The deadline for the centre declaration forms is also 18 June

The endorsement grades are not part of the overall subject grade so won’t be part of our quality assurance or appeals processes for this summer. This means that teachers may continue to share the endorsement grade/level with their students as part of the work they’ve completed towards the endorsement.

It’s important to remember that the overall subject grade you submit to us remains confidential, and that these must not be shared with your students.

Students can still appeal their separate endorsement grade, but only before you submit these grades/levels to us and using the non-exam assessment (NEA) appeals process your school/college has in place for other subjects with NEA.

The JCQ Guidance on the determination of grades for A/AS levels and GCSEs for summer 2021 has been updated to clarify that the endorsement grades/levels can be shared with students.

Guidance and resources

  • GCSE English Language Spoken Language – (8700/C) guidance and support materials
    • there’s no requirement for teachers to submit a sample of audio-visual recordings of Spoken Language assessments
    • the Spoken Language assessment can take place in front of a single teacher who can represent an ‘audience’
    • the Spoken Language assessment can be conducted by the teacher at any time during the course and by virtual means.
    • A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics practicals – cross board statement explaining practical endorsement arrangements for students entered in June 2021
