Hello,

I hope that everyone is well and safe.

Attached are the Press Releases for two books: Happy after All (due in February 2021) and Biscuit Moon (published in Sept 2020).

Due in March is another special. “How Totsuwa became Cherokee” is a book we have been working with the Cherokee Nations People Organisation in USA for over two years. They wanted the sound enabled book to teach new generations their script and language. The project was on one day and we rushed into action only for weeks later to be off, due to lack of approval by the funders. Now it is on, and there is another story about how we found the illustrator.

The Cherokee are one of many Native American Indians tribes. I came across them in cowboy comics in Burma! These books take a long time to make, reflect on, amend and design. Totsuwa is the name of the Cardinal Bird in USA, from where I gathered why they were called Red Indians and most comics had the Chief in a crown of Feathers. The Cherokee were banished from North Carolina after a final defeat and embarked on the famous Trail of Tears all the way to the plains of Oklahoma. The ‘coming of age’ story has spiders, pike, bear, trout, angry swan, desert plains and smoky mountains which even in draft form makes a really good read aloud.

Shared the pdf during story time with 4 and half year old grand daughter who was intrigued – mainly by the sounds of tongue twisting Cherokee words. She liked the animals – who would have thought that a spider was wise!!!- but has yet to understand the context. Maybe four years later.

Anyway, have a good weekend.

Regards

Robene

Thank you for a chance to look at these books. I remember Cardinals from my time in upstate NY - they were bright bright bright red. I'll read and respond next week and feature them in our newsletter.
Best wishes,
Stuart

Thanks Stuart, I will put one of each in the post tomorrow.

If any academics would like to  receive review copies, we have budgeted 20 copies of each title available. Please let us know which University and course you teach on, and if you give us permission to quote your review with your name on our USA, Swedish, German and UK websites.

EAL is a tough area, with a lot of interest and decreasing budgets. If a lecturer runs a course with a  specific section on L1 or dual language books, please call us and we can send you samples for the students to critique. Again, if anyone sees the ‘about us’ section of uk.mantralingua.com, for the past 4 years we have posted internships for PhD students of ‘Diversity in English’ to take up. My son completed his PhD (now lectures at Goldsmiths) and I know how tough it was, and only the passion for his subject kept him going at times. The offer, so far with no take-up, still stands.

Good evening,

I am the EAL coordinator in an Academy based in the UK.  I would welcome a couple of copies of your new books and I could trial them on my EAL students if that would help.

Thank you,
