Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I am very happy to have been recommended this post. I have read some really useful and insightful comments.

I am currently working as an an EAL teach across the junior and senior school in a private school in West London.
I am struggling with some of the students who I am supporting in the senior school.
It's actually my first time working in a UK school setting, previously I have worked in international colleges/ schools, so this setting is very new to me, even though I was born and raised in London.

One of my year 8 pupils is Japanese, has been in London for 3 years, however new to this current school. He has very little English , and is massively struggling with all his lessons but especially his English language and literacy. I only have two sessions with him a week ( this is hardly enough).
Does anyone have any advice on how I should prepare more efficiently for these sessions? At the moment the main English class teacher, sends me an extract from the book they are currently reading The Darkside by Tom Becker, and sets questions.

I also am supporting a year 10 Ukrainian student who has been in the UK for 4 years and has been receiving EAL provision from the beginning , however he lacks motivation, is fairly withdrawn etc. They are currently doing The Inspector Calls in class and he will be doing the IGCSE next year. How can I best support him in these sessions in order to help him?

Any advice on any of the above, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joanna
