What
works to attract and keep great teachers?
|
|
|
|
Many schools across England face challenges in attracting and retaining staff. This is particularly acute for schools serving disadvantaged communities. Great teachers have the biggest
impact on pupils’ outcomes, but too many are leaving the profession.
✨ Our new evidence summary brings together the latest research on how schools
can attract and retain teachers.
It explores four key areas for action:
✅ Managing workload effectively
✅ Enabling flexible working
✅ Strengthening leadership and school culture
✅ Offering financial incentives and tangible benefits
We’ve also published a new reflection tool to help school leaders make evidence-informed decisions that promote staff wellbeing, stability, and long-term success.
We hope this resource helps schools focus on what really works — offering a practical, easy-to-use guide for improving teacher retention.

Have
your say on what makes a great school climate
|
|

|
We’re inviting secondary schools to take part in a new study led by the National Centre for Social Research — exploring how school policies and everyday practices shape school climate
and pupil outcomes.
Here’s what’s involved:
✅ A headteacher or SLT member completes a short online survey about their
school’s approaches to developing an inclusive school climate and perceptions of how to create a nurturing school environment.
✅ Years 7, 8 and 9 teachers share what they do in their classrooms through
a quick web survey.
✅ Pupils share their own views on what their school climate feels like.
Each survey takes about 15 minutes, and every response helps build a clearer picture of what really works to create positive, supportive school environments.
🎁 As a thank you, all school staff who complete a survey will receive a £10
Love2Shop voucher.
The research team will provide full instructions — it’s quick and easy to take part.

How
to help your pupils become confident, fluent writers
|
|
|
|
✏️ What helps children write with fluency and independence? In this blog, our literacy
specialist Chloe Butlin explores how teaching transcription skills can make all the difference.
The blog features a classroom video showing how a simple sentence dictation routine can boost writing confidence by:
👉 Modelling handwriting and spelling
👉 Reducing cognitive load
👉 Freeing pupils to focus on their ideas
Discover how embedding transcription fluency early supports every child to become a confident, independent writer.
