Good afternoon,

We have a young asylum seeker who was on roll at one of our secondary schools last year. When the young person enrolled in school originally, the date of birth given by parents and the previous local authority made the young person year 10. The young person joined mid-way through Y10 and they completed Y11 in school.

They left in the summer at the end of year 11 and the young person has gone to enrol in college but there is a discrepancy with their date of birth. The YP has a BRP card that makes them current year 11 so therefore they are not able to enrol in college. Parents are now saying the BRP card date of birth is correct.

I wonder if anyone has come across this before? I’ve heard that home office documents can often be incorrect but not sure how to proceed.

Kind regards,

Antoinette

I've not met this situation this way round before. Usually it's the other way round - young asylum seekers are sometimes registered by their parents as being 2 or 3 years younger than they really are, in order to give them a chance of more schooling to learn English before they have to take GCSEs. That causes a whole different set of problems!

It is a bit difficult, isn't it! Hope you find a solution.

Ann
